Perfect Pedi at The Peacock Rooms, Sevenoaks
I pop over to visit friends and family in Sevenoaks a lot and was excited to hear about the brand new luxury Aveda hair salon and spa that has just opened up on the high street. So a couple of weeks ago, when the sun was sporadically putting its hat on and I knew that sandals would soon be an inevitable part of my daily wardrobe, I decided to put them to the ultimate test. Tidying up the Muddy tootsies after all the many months of cruel neglect. And let me tell you the staff were troopers – if they grimaced it was internally. So extra points for their unflinching professionalism!
The Peacock Rooms is positioned in a Grade II listed building on London Road, right in the middle of Sevenoaks – less than 10 seconds walk from Blighs car park no less (so not far to trot with those newly polished toes or battle the breeze with a blow dry).
Owner Sarah Rumsey is a Vogue recommended bridal hair and make up artist so not surprisingly the salon specialises in, and does great, bridal packages. Experienced as she is, Sarah is clearly well aware of all those personal and décor touches that add to the whole ‘me-time’ pampering experience. I’m offered a complimentary glass of fizz on arrival for starters – so obviously I’m won over. The space is quite small but that adds to the intimate feel and more than makes up for this with charm and style.
The salon is very proud of its green credentials and works in partnership with eco-conscious beauty brand Aveda. As a spur-of-the-moment decision I booked myself in for a Stress Fix Body Massage as well (this was not long after the Muddy Awards and weeks of long working days and juggling kiddies had taken its toll). The Aveda oil they use (chosen by me according to my preferred smell) includes a sensitive skin range, clear skin range, stress fix oil range… They are all available for home aftercare if you want some for soaking in the bath etc. Even the towels they use to dry my feet are organic recyclable ones. When it comes to my pedicure (non-gel, but still lasted for ages) the nail polish is butter LONDON a natural nail polish that basically means no nasty chemicals.
Beauty Therapist, Amanda, is extremely personable and chatty, but she is very good in deciphering what a client needs. While I had the sumptuous massage, she kept things low key, soft music and the like, and let me drift off in my own mind (not difficult for me, although there’s usually 800 things going on in there…). But, the point is, she didn’t interrupt my chaotic mind with any chat, and that I think is a good beautician’s skill. She is also got that great gift of being surprisingly strong for one so slight, and I thoroughly enjoyed the rub down using Aveda oils.
After the R&R on the neck and shoulders, it was onto the toes, and despite not having seen daylight for a good few months, my feet were effortlessly pampered to within an inch of their life without Amanda showing any sign of judgement (phew)!
The Peacock Rooms is a friendly, relaxed, small and stylish salon. Prices are reasonable, for a higher end salon. I’m adding it to my shortlist of go-to destinations for a pampering de-stress (think Day Spa Lite – all the quality and care but just less time out and expense). I had a Stress Fix Body Massage (£45 for 45 mins), and Express Pedicure (£25) but you can get a quick File & Paint from £14 upwards; facials £30 upwards and there’s a Men’s grooming and hair, to look after his ever growing needs, too! It’s a very personable, one on one experience at this small beauty haven, and sometimes when you don’t want the chit chat of a hyperactive receptionist and a waiting area with other customers, this hits the spot.
I haven’t tried out the hair cut and colour yet (watch this space for a review of that). But I can say that whether you need to get beach body ready – or you’re looking for brilliant bridal packages this salon is definitely worth a visit. And Amanda’s the gal who can sort out those tootsies, however bad the winter damage!
