ALERT: anti-ageing Power Facial
I’m as keen on a facial as the next 40-plus woman (no botox ever having perked up the Muddy visage). Even keener when it’s a salon’s ‘signature treatment’ and called the Power Facial (I’m thinking dramatic action movie voiceover here) suggesting this is the one that really delivers. And now I’m adding mustard (metaphorically, because that’s how keen I am) because rather than trudging into London or off to the sticks to try it, it can be found at No. 6 Clinic on St John’s Rd, Tunbridge Wells, the bit of town with loads of indie shops and eateries and a cheap as chips car park.
The No.6 staff refer to the St John’s Road salon as ‘the shop’ to distinguish between this, their beauty rooms, and No.6 Clinic their more medical destination (for cosmetic treatments such as injectables) that’s located just around the corner. The No.6 shop is fairly new (less than 2 years) and this is where you go for everything from pedicures to Power Facials. It also won our public-voted Muddy Award for Best Beauty Salon in Kent last year.
You’ll be greeted by the very friendly staff, like Beth, below, or Josie, on reception. My facial was done by Kelly, who has worked in the beauty industry for the past 15 years and seemed to really know her stuff. The Power Facial is a bespoke treatment – so beforehand you have a brief consultation to pinpoint what kind of skin you have and what would work best for you.
First the skin is exfoliated using a facial peel or medical microdermabrasion – for me it was a Pumpkin facial peel (created to address age management and break out concerns). The idea being that once the fruit acids have cleared out the pores beneath the treatment will be able to penetrate into the deeper layers of the skin. At this point my skin got really very tingly (it is super sensitive) – but Kelly asked me to say if the sensation became too much – so I felt comfortable and in control the whole time.
Then this is where the new light machine comes in (there’s two choices here as well – depending on whether you are more sensitive to the light or not) – these machines emit rays that penetrate down to the dermal layers of the skin, stimulating collagen production. While I lay under the light Kelly even treated me to a reflex point foot massage – all part of the service. Lastly, the high strength antioxidant Idebenone combined with AHA and vitamin A is applied. Yup, your skin really gets its 45 minutes worth. And because I was self-conscious of my polished pink skin and the fact that I still had a meeting and school run to do Kelly kindly applied a touch of Jane Iredale powder makeup before I left so I looked a little more human.
So was I happy with the results? Well, the main thing I think with facials is to be realistic. My skin is sensitive, prone to break outs, has patches of pigmentation which appeared during pregnancy and increasingly lined with wrinkles! But, but, but… there is no doubt my skin looked firmer, smoother and clearer afterwards – I even had several compliments on my complexion throughout the week. It was like winter’s dead skin cells where lifted and my skin lost that lifeless, dull look. Here’s a piccie, below, so you can judge for yourself. I think the treatment relaxed me a lot too (well it’s not often I get to lie down and relax for the best part of an hour) so I look a bit drunk (hey, who said ‘nothing new there’?!)
