Taming the frizz

I've just discovered the secret to frizz and fuss free hair. It turned my tresses from cave-woman to calmed-woman - seeing is believing...

I used to quite like my hair, it was thick and in reasonable condition, despite years of high-lights. But post-40 the thickness has become more wiry and unruly. So much so that unless it’s gets a really decent blow-dry (so not from me, but a professional) I must endure a daily halo of frizz (worse in drizzly weather).

I spend hours straightening it – which seems to further ruin the condition. Occasionally – when stars are correctly aligned, the humidity is suitable and I position my head at precisely the correct angle on my pillow – I’ll wake up with a lovely wave. But for the most part for the past decade or so, since having kids, it’s just been me and my frizz.

So it’s a big ‘hello and how are you’ to the OLAPLEX hair treatment – the new salon repair kit for taming your tresses.

If you’re new to Muddy you might not yet have discovered Camden Villa Hair – a little pocket rocket of a hair salon tucked away in Sissinghurst, in a newly converted barn in the owner’s back garden.

Brilliant London-stylist Linsey has created a stylishly decorated, delightfully quirky space next to her house – and because she doesn’t have the expensive overheads of a busy high street salon Linsey’s prices are really amazing value – but the surroundings and her skills are first rate. Come, follow me as we turn off the A229 on Wisley Pound and enter through a surburban side gate that suggests nothing of the brilliance that lies inside.

A Holy Grail for in-the-know women with wild banshee hair like mine is OLAPLEX. It’s an innovative conditioner that promises to transform your tresses’ fortunes, without the big price tag of, say, keratin-based treatments. However it doesn’t make hair straight like keratin or smooth your hair so dramatically – it’s like a ‘light’ version – and quicker/cheaper.

Here’s the science bit – it’s a simple three-step process that works on a molecular level. OLAPLEX formulas seek out broken bonds in the hair (which are caused by chemical, thermal and mechanical damage) and repair them, with the promise of restoring compromised hair to former glory. It’s ideal for manes like mine which have been ‘dyed’ to death, tainted by tongs and just experiencing the signs of general ageing.

If you’re not sure how you’d feel about using a salon that’s essentially a converted barn in someone’s back garden, let me tell you that Linsey is young (grrrr), fun, has a great sense of humour and puts you immediately at ease. Even although she’s just turned 30 she’s a mum-of-two who has been cutting and colouring for years, and trained and worked at London salons.

She’s also got a good eye for interiors, having personally put together all the styling for the salon and there’s nothing ‘back-room’ about it – it’s high quality so you do very much feel that you’re being pampered in a proper salon environment. There are only 2 client ‘stations’ with the wash basin set on a plinth in the same room) like I said, cosy!

The first thing I noticed was how soft my hair felt – having thick curly hair means it can feel coarse, but the treatment has left my hair feeling really hydrated and healthy. Linsey says the treatment is ideal for anyone who wants to help control their hair.

On hair as coarse as mine, it’s unrealistic to expect it to be magically super straight and smooth – and mine isn’t – although the more frequently you have the treatment done, the more it will retain it’s softness. It can be done at the same time as highlights – so very time efficient too, which is really important to me. The effects should last 4 – 6 weeks.

But the biggest bonus is how much easier it is to manage my hair at home. Since having the treatment, when I blow dry my own hair it’s far more accommodating and just generally looks in better condition. That’s the real game-changer for me.

It’s £30 – £35 per treatment, depending on the length of your hair. So with the price of a cut and blowdry at £30 and hairlights at £40 – you can have ALL 3 treatments at Linsey’s for £100. If you compare that to most high street salons you’ll see what I mean when I say this place is ama-zing value for money.
