Muddy tries: Truffle, Tunbridge Wells

Meet Truffle's brilliant new hair stylist at the recently-opened friendly salon in the heart of Tunbridge Wells (& a special offer so you can try it too!)

Chances are if you’ve driven down Camden Road in Tunbridge Wells in the last couple of months you’ll have noticed, Truffle, a stylish new addition to the street – and no it has absolutely nothing to do with food and everything to do with hair and beauty.

It’s the second salon launched by owner Sarah Taylor who is replicating the success of her St Leonards-On-Sea Sussex salon right here in Kent. Not only was I super impressed with my cut and colour (scroll down to see!) but there’s brilliant beauty here too. And it’s all set in gorgeous surroundings. Introducing your new favourite one-stop-shop for all your hair and beauty needs…

If you don’t know Camden Road, it’s at the top end of Tunbridge Wells and a buzzy little street full of restaurants, cafés and a cool exercise studio SPN. I’ve always had a soft spot for this road and love the vibrant, yet laid-back vibe. You’ve got Royal Victoria Place car park just opposite. Come out the exit next to the Camden Centre and you’re just a minute walk to the salon.

Truffle – being laid back and welcoming yet cool and cosy – fits right in Camden Road. With the Sussex salon being known for it’s stylish interiors it’s not surprising that they have followed a similar look and feel here.

Inside it’s spacious and sleek – with funky mirrors in the hair section (see above) and the beauty counter looks good enough to eat (see below)!BEAUTY

A quick peruse of the treatment list and you’ll find all of the standard beauty maintenance ones that you’d expect, along with a selection of more bespoke treatments such as their REN face and body treatments that use Zen shiatsu and Japanese massage techniques which help to free energy flow and improve your whole wellbeing, with the aim of leaving you feeling balanced grounded and deeply relaxed.

I had a much-needed pedicure, to humanise my feet before my summer holiday! Overseeing the beauty side of things is Amy, a really lovely therapist who did a great job.

The brilliant thing about having hair and beauty under one roof is that, even if you’re watching the clock there’s always time for one of their manicure or pedicures to pass the time whilst your hair colour sets – think of it as efficient multi-tasking.

Here’s Phoebe – Truffle’s fab senior stylist!

And now for the main course! Before my appointment I was quite literally becoming a safety hazard being out in public (ie. people were starting to walk into lampposts because they were too busy staring aghast at my unruly bounce) so stylist Phoebe had her work cut out!

Now I’ve had my hair done in several establishments over the years and I’ve learnt that stylish interiors won’t cut it on their own. It’s all about the individual stylist. And I can tell you Phoebe is a real gem.

Firstly, she’s just lovely – very young, very down-to-earth with absolutely none of the pretension of some big salons. She really listened to me whining on about the poor condition of my hair so that she could get the best idea of what I needed.

The result?

Ta-da!! As I said, I think you’re gonna love Phoebe and her magic scissors. After a decent cut and blow dry, with a side of coffee, cookies and decent conversation, Phoebe is now Wonder Woman in my eyes. Here we are. She’s the one looking *cough* considerably younger. Grrrr.

A quick final word on the products used at this salon because I think this is a particular stand-out feature for Truffle. Owner Sarah has really done her research and brought in ranges that you might not necessarily have come across before but will love. In the Beauty rooms they use REN which I’m a big fan of. REN uses 100% plant and mineral actives and is free from all skin-unfriendly synthetic ingredients. And, for Hair, it’s Davines, which uses the highest quality natural ingredients being paraben and sulphate-free, as well as sustainable.

The whole experience took my bonce from frizzy and lacklustre, to swishy and shiny. And I loved it. I reckon you will, too (especially with the special offer, below!)

Good for: Those who care about what’s going onto their skin and hair and what it’s doing to the planet; anyone looking for a friendly, welcoming little retreat where they’ll be able to get everything done under one roof.

Not for: Those expecting Redken, or Dermalogica, nor those looking for a budget cut and blow dry. This is a central town hair and beauty salon that delivers a pretty indulgent experience. The prices are fair but reflect the quality of the venue.

££: Average prices for a central salon. My tint and highlights cost £80. My cut £60. A wash & bouncy blow-dry costs from £30. Manicure costs £26 & pedi’s cost £36. REN Express Facial 35.00.

Special offer for Muddy readers: get yourself 20% off hair and beauty services on your first visit to Truffle Tunbridge Wells. Just quote ‘Muddy’ when booking (offer available until Sun 30 Sept 2018). GO GO GO!
