Sissinghurst’s hair secret!
One of the best cuts and colours I've ever had was at this brand new salon in Sissinghurst - now it can be your best kept beauty secret too
I’m so excited to tell you about Camden Villa Hair – a little pocket rocket of a hair salon tucked away in Sissinghurst, in a newly converted barn in the owner’s back garden. Brilliant London-stylist Linsey has created a stylishly decorated, delightfully quirky space next to her house – and because she doesn’t have the expensive overheads of a busy high street salon Linsey’s prices are really amazing value – but the surroundings and her skills are first rate. Come, follow me as we turn off the A229 on Wisley Pound and enter through a surburban side gate that suggests nothing of the brilliance that lies inside.
Speaking of brilliance, just round the corner in Sissinghurst is The Milk House (a Muddy Award winner) and fab place to stop for lunch. So the next time you see a chink of light in your diary, make it a hair/lunch/me-time affair. Anyway, let’s get back to the barnet. I want to say straight from the start that Linsey gave me one of the best cut and colours I’ve ever had. And I had my hair done regularly by top London stylists in my glossy mag days *nostalgic sigh*.
If you’re not sure how you’d feel about using a salon that’s essentially a converted barn in someone’s back garden, let me tell you that Linsey is young (grrrr), fun, has a great sense of humour and puts you immediately at ease. Even although she’s still in her late 20s she’s a mum-of-two who has been cutting and colouring for years, and trained and worked at London salons, and always knew she’d open her own boutique salon when the time was right.
Running a salon on the side of her house makes total sense as Linsey does the personal touch like no hairdresser I’ve ever met before. I felt more like I was in a friend’s sitting room catching up over a cuppa. She’s also got a good eye for interiors, having personally put together all the styling for the salon and there’s nothing ‘back-room’ about it – it’s high quality and cool so you do very much feel that you’re being pampered in a proper salon environment. There are only 2 client ‘stations’ with the wash basin set on a plinth in the same room) like I said, cosy!
Unquestionably, it’s a very different experience having one person do your cut and colour in a small room, more intimate, and you’d think it could be a bit uncomfortable, but I didn’t find it that way at all. Linsey is very easy to get along with – she’s very chatty, massively passionate and knowledgable about hair, and also understands that you might not want to chat all the way through he process, or even at all.
When it’s just you and a hair stylist for two hours or so, you really are getting the massive benefit of their attention. No one is having ‘you’re next client is here’whispered in their ear, or fobbing you off on the trainee to burn your scalp under the shower head. It’s a VIP style treatment at a price that frankly undercuts the bigger salons because of the small overheads, so everyone’s a winner. And what of the end result? Well I’m full of admiration for lovely Linsey because she smashed my greys into oblivion with ‘babylights’ the much finer version of ‘highlights’ so no blocky, stripy colour, which I detest and great for more subtle regrowth.
Okay, prices. Cut and blowdry £25; Half foils £35; Full foils £45; Full tint 30; Tint root £25 – you get the idea – this place is ama-zing value for money.
So, if you happen to be in the Sissinghurst/Cranbrook vicinity, I don’t have even a hair’s breadth hesitation to recommend Camden Villa Hair. Different, quirky, quality – and, as it’s so new, it’s still a well kept secret. It couldn’t be more Muddy if it tried. Just contact the salon to make your booking! And enjoy this little space of follicular perfection.
