The Chair in Canterbury has always been one of our favourite hair destinations in Kent and it just got even more alluring with the launch of its new Beauty salon – particularly as it is the only salon in the Canterbury area to offer Decleor facials. Step this way to hear more….
As you may recall, The Chair is housed in a 16th Century building, formerly a bakery, with wooden beams and buckets of character and is situated on the King’s Mile so is in a stunning part of the city. It is headed up by the effervescent, Katie Hancock, who has been running The Chair for the past 18 years, and who became quite the local celebrity at the end of lockdown as she re-opened the salon at midnight from Saturday 4th July in a bid to accommodate her persistent clients’ requests to get their hair done. This quickly became worldwide news with TV appearances on This Morning and a late-night visit from Washington Post to record her midnight opening!
Previously, The Chair has hosted other beauty salons in its upstairs space, but Katie has now taken this side of things in-house and with a refreshing and urban twist.
We’ve said this before but one of the winning factors about The Chair is its hugely friendly and fun team who not only know how to look after your untamed tresses, but they are always chirpy and full of good chat and no ‘going anywhere nice for your holiday?’ ‘cliché starters here. The additional beauty of The Chair (especially in a post Covid-19 world) is how much space they have, and the new Beauty rooms are contained in a separate part of the building upstairs so perfect for a quick manicure post your blow-dry or you could spend the day ensconced up there enjoying many of its new beauty treatments.
Katie and the beauty team (headed up by the lovely Rosie) have transformed the upstairs beauty space into a boutique hotel vibe with the music to match. There is no panpipe or whale music here which I think really adds to the sophisticated scene and makes you feel immediately relaxed on arrival. The beauty team are also dressed in funky black industrial jumpsuits (with face masks and visors of course) and the first impression that you are in a fresh and modern space so no anarchic approaches to beauty here which gives me additional confidence about indulging in any beauty treatments.
Our mission was to try out a Decelor facial (sigh) but some essential beauty maintenance was also required so we tried out the waxing service too. What we particularly liked about this part (obviously not all of it -we are not sadists) is that the team totally recognizes how waxing (and other beauty essentials) are the bread-and-butter of your beauty routine so they offer a very swift and cost-effective service in this area which means you can save your time (and money) on the more pampering treatments. We also liked the use of hot wax, which is removed by hand, when it comes to smaller and more intimate areas as it really has a positive effect on the pain levels and better on the skin – and hey, it was pink so pretty too! Let me also tell you that I have lived in Brazil, where Brazilian waxing is part of its beauty culture, for 8 years and this was the least-painful wax I have ever had in my life. That speaks volumes to me.
Rosie, who has trained at other Muddy favourites such as Granary Spa and Eastwell Manor, liaised closely with Katie about which beauty brand to use for facials and Decleor was the winning choice as it can suit so many variety of skin-types with something for everyone and they only use the most pure essential oils in all their products. Rosie diagnosed my skin-type ahead of the beauty session and suggested the Quench and Protect Facial which is super-hydrating and included a gentle exfoliation as well as Neroli Amara Oil serum plus a nutrient rich mask with a blissful hand massage on the side as this was working its magic. I loved the therapeutic side of how Rosie operated with a calming mini-foot massage before the treatment started to really signify the start of a very indulgent (and beneficial) treatment.
Well I am not going to tell you that I now look like Dua Lipa but I was delighted with how fresh and bright my skin immediately looked after the facial – plus it has retained that glow for a good few days afterwards.
There are plenty more beauty treatments in the pipeline such as brow lamination and O.P.I. nail powder treatments (making that gel finish even better!) and Molly is also joining the team so they can ensure specialists in different areas. This is also the place in Canterbury to go for a self-tan and MLAB lashes so all your beauty requirements under one roof!
In a post-Covid 19 world, things are obviously a bit differently done at The Chair that they are currently open seven days a week with two concurrent teams to ensure that they can still look after their clients should a team member have to self-isolate.
The Quench and Protect facial costs £65 for 60 minutes and half leg, Brazilian and underarm wax costs £52.
