Black Deer Festival

It's the festival everyone's going wild for! With just a few days to go before the big event here's all you folks need to know and where you can get the last few tickets!

Heard about Black Deer Festival? Well hold on to your stetson hats because the first ever Americana and country music festival is coming to the UK, better than that it’s happening right here in our neck-of-the-woods and it’s going to be all kinds of rootin’-tootin, foot-stompin’ cool. And you can win tickets for a family of 4 right here!WHAT & WHERE? Black Deer will take place on Fri 22, Sat 23 & Sun 24 June in Eridge Park, Britain’s oldest deer park, on the Kent/east Sussex border near Tunbridge Wells (just 50 minutes by train from London to nearby Tunbridge Wells station).

To sum it up this festival celebrates the best of a bygone rural age and way of life. It’s all about enjoying the simplicity of the natural world around us and you’ll hear the phrases ‘authentic’ and ‘returning to our roots’ bandied around a lot. Making it quite a relevant movement right now.

Eridge Park

The festival will have sections dedicated to music (read more on this below); food (think classic American smokehouse, BBQ, oh and whiskey); motors (show caseing all the best mean machines from mustangs to motorcycles); traders (get a beautiful head-dress in the emporium) and young folk (there’ll be loads of children’s activities as it’s a family friendly affair).

Noble Jacks

MUSIC: It’s basically a stellar lineup of established and new Americana, country, blues, folk and bluegrass artists. Iron & Wine (didn’t know this guy but am getting better aquainted after a quick google) and Passenger (love this guy) have been announced as the first headliners. But there’s heaps of acts (more than 70 across 6 stages in fact) to catch including Keifer Sutherland (yes, he of The Lost Boys and 24… I know, who knew, right?)…

And my personal faves Noble Jacks, (pictured above) with their own unique brand of high-energy, life-affirming, fiddle-and-footstomp. If you love a jig at a live gigs then this band – are going to be right up your street.

Jason Isbell and The 400 Unit

It’s official. Country is cool. As someone who was raised listening to The Best of Country Music (it was an epic 4 volume casette compilation) this is music to my ears. I mean, there’s been a strong influence on pop culture for some time now – from Taylor Swift to more recently Kylie, who recorded her latest album, Golden, in Nashville, infusing her glitterball pop with some good ol’ country grit.

Clockwise from top left: Catherine McGrath, Keifer Sutherland, Passenger and Ward Thomas

So who to watch out for in the line-up?

  • Passenger (obvs) this ones a no-brainer.
  • Keifer Sutherland – I mean it just has to be seen to be believed, right?
  • Noble Jacks – I defy you not to tap you feet – nay, make that defy you not to jump and jig – when these guys take to the stage!
  • Ward Thomas – you might already be familiar with their impossibly catchy Carry You Home. British modern, melodic country music duo, composed of 24-year-old twin sisters Catherine and Lizzy Ward Thomas from Hampshire.
  • Catherine McGrath – an Irish 21-year-old with a sound not dissimilar to Taylor Swift.

Woodland Tribe

KIDS: The organisers behind this event definitely know their onions having worked in the festival scene for years and as a result have been really specific about the ‘young folk’ activities they want to offer. There’s Woodland Tribe a ‘Build your own adventure playground’ experience (pictured above) which has already proved hugely popular at Camp Bestival and Elderflower Fields. And here’ll also be tree climbing, zip wire, creative workshops from local Freckles & Fire (love these guys), storytelling, music stage and more…

CAMPING: With every option from just pitching up with a tent or camper van to some great fancy camping options although at the time of writing these were filling up fast. There is still some availability of the gypsy caravans (pictured above) so if you’re interested, move quickly! Check out all the details of car parking and booking your pitch here.

So it seems Black Deer Festival fever has Kent in its grip. I mean, we’re talking Kiefer Sutherland on guitar here. Sure, it’s going to be different, but different is cool, right. So who’s in?! (Tickets here…) ENTER OUR COMPETITION BELOW TO WIN 4 TICKETS!
