Muddy Kent’s Half Term Survival Guide: 28 MAY – 5 JUN

Half term already? ‘Fraid so. Comes round screamingly fast, doesn’t it?  Still, the weather should (oh, *please* let it…) be ok and you’ve got to love a Bank Holiday Monday.  Plenty going on to keep you and yours occupied — and to keep your small folk busy, happy and out of your hair…

The Grand Medieval Joust, Leeds Castle, Maidstone, Sat 28- Mon 30 May


Proper legitimised fighting? My Mini Muddies will love this. Enjoy a day of medieval entertainment in the beautiful setting of Leeds Castle as fully armoured knights battle it out in real jousting competitions and other such amusements, including firepower demonstrations, living history encampments and archery tournaments. Chaaarge!

Pinocchio (Ballet Theatre UK), Assembly Hall Theatre, Tunbridge Wells, Sun 29 May


Join the disobedient, long-nosed puppet on his quest to become a real boy as he overcomes obstacles, faces consequences and even ends up in the belly of a whale. Our favourite characters Gepetto, the Blue Fairy and Jiminy Cricket will join Pinocchio in this inventive performance from Ballet Theatre UK. Accompanied by a stunning classical score this production sounds like a great option for the whole family.

Edwardian Life, Hever Castle, Edenbridge, Sat 28 May – Sun 5 Jun


This May half term holiday, Hever Castle is offering a fun and educational day learning about the traditional Edwardian lifestyle. Soak up the Edwardian way of life by getting involved in daily activities such as costume characters, best dressed competition and traditional fairground games. Experience a traditional Edwardian school where old fashioned PE, reading, writing and arithmetic sessions will take place. Resident lepidopterist will also be running sessions throughout the day teaching the public about the study of butterflies and moths.

Sheepstakes, Kent Life, Maidstone, Sat 28 May – Sun 5 Jun


Visit Kent Life during the half term and cheer on the resident sheep as they take part in some whacky racing. There’s even ferret racing too! The award winning farm will also be holding family shows all week in Brundle’s Big Top including, Imperial Birds of Prey and sheep shearing demonstrations on Tuesday and Saturday from the farmer.

Bushcraft Bank Holiday, Penshurst Place, Penshurst, Sun 29- Mon 30 May


Let the Mini Muddies get mucky and learn to set up camp fires, build shelters and scavenger hunt with a choice outdoor activities on offer at Penshurst place. The Bushcraft Company (top notch for outdoor activities/education in the UK) and will be sending in their wilderness experts to take your young’uns into the wild for real back to nature experiences. Can the Minis stay for the week? Pleeease?

Family Fun Day, Goudhurst Inn, Goudhurst, Sun 29 May


If you fancy a family Sunday lunch out with a difference, head over to the Goudhurst Inn where you can enjoy a G & T in the sunshine and ‘fill your boots’ BBQ while the Mini Muddies keep themselves busy with the bouncy castle and face painting. Local acoustic guitarist, Lee Golledge, will be playing live. Relaaaaax.

Family Quiz Challenge, Riverhill Himalayan Gardens, Sevenoaks, Sat 28 – Mon 30 May


Prepare your noggins and get ready to surprise everyone with some impressive knowledge bombs at the gorgeous gardens of Riverhill in the Family Quiz Challenge. My team didn’t do so well on the last Quiz Night I went to, well we were called ‘Only In It for the Wine and Nibbles’. Maybe you’d fare better?

Farm Walk, The Hop Shop, Sevenoaks, Sat 28 May

Farm walk

The award winning Hop Shop is based on the family run Castle Farm. The farm sells its own produce including beef, lavender, honey, apples and hops. During half term the Hop Shop will be running a special behind the scenes Farm Walk to give the public an insight into the Castle farm Beef enterprise. The walk includes a lesson in how grass and maize are grown to feed their native and continental breeds of cattle.

David Walliams’ best selling children’s book is being performed live on stage. The Birmingham Stage Company who are the producers of Horrible Histories are touring the UK with this fantastic new show and are performing in Canterbury as part of Canterbury Children’s Festival.

If you have little artists in the family who love all things crafty the Riverhill’s craft workshops are perfect to keep your children amused (you won’t even have to clear up the mess afterwards!) This event, suitable for kids up to 12 years old will have you creating beautiful lanterns to take home for a summer evening.

Dance & Singing Workshops, The Quarterhouse, Folkestone, Wed 1 Jun – Thu 2 Jun

If your kiddies have a passion for the performing arts these workshops are the perfect chance for them to sing and dance their socks off! Dancers who are aged 5-7 will be given a fun crash course in dance, while 8-12 year olds will explore interactive digital performance technologies. Singers aged 8-12 will take part in a fun singing workshop with musician Emily Watts who will teach your mini Mariahs a variety of songs from contemporary pop through to gospel and musical theatre.

Eynsford Craft, Vintage & Gift Fair, Eynsford, Sat 28 May

Love a fair? This weekend’s instalment will be in Eyensford Town Hall where stalls will be selling quality handmade products from local producers, growers and upcyclers. Get those purses at the ready and support your local businesses!

The Chelsea Fringe, Leeds Castle, Maidstone, Sat 21 May – Sun 12 Jun

In preparation for the Chelsea Flower Show there’s loads of horticultural highlights taking place around the UK. Leeds Castle will present perfectly positioned floral picture frames around the castle grounds to celebrate the Chelsea Fringe and ask you to ‘Take A View’ of the beautiful colours, shapes and fragrances throughout the 500 acres of grounds. Head Gardener, Andrew McCoryn will be giving specialist talks on the history of the gardens every Wednesday and Friday during the Chelsea Fringe.

Bluewater Half Term Activities, Bluewater, Greenhithe, Sat 28 May – Sun 5 Jun


Stop off at Bluewater to enjoy a spot of shopping while keeping the kids amused during the half term break. Krispy Kreme will be holding doughnut-decorating workshops at 10am-12pm, colouring competitions, 15 minute doughnut tours and face painting. While you’re there you could visit the Pirates Cove Adventure Park that holds two 18-hole mini golf courses, pirate ships, cascading waterfalls, castles and sunken boats. Don’t forget to stop off at the Pirate Pedaloes for a (hopefully) relaxing bob in the Blue Lagoon.

Featuring over 300 exhibitors displaying and selling a wide range of goods, this event is perfect for any green fingered Muddy readers. The main feature of the show are the floral marquees that demonstrate stunning flower displays from various horticulturists including Chelsea medal winners. The event will also include a craft pavilion, brass band and children’s rides just in case your little ones don’t share your enthusiasm for all things green and leafy.
