The movie adaption starring Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman has been named ‘Best Film’ in countless online polls and due to the amazing storyline and sparkling cast this impressive stage rendition could go at least some way towards living up to the success of the on screen classic.

Hops ‘n’ Harvest Beer Festival, Kent Life, Maidstone, Sat 10 – Sun 11 Sept

Grab your beer goggles and head to Kent Life to celebrate the 29th year of their annual Hops ‘n’ Harvest Festival. You can learn all about the process of harvesting hops from picking to drying (you can even give hop picking a go) and see one of the last Oast houses back in action for the weekend. Of course the beer tent will be in full swing ready for visitors to sample up to 60 beers and cider. There will also be plenty of entertainment during the weekend including live music, zorbing (er, of course), tug of war and donkey rides.

The Social Festival is a boutique music festival bringing the best dance acts and a taste of Ibiza to the Kent countryside. Rounding up his summer’s festival season in style the line up will feature some of the worlds best electronic acts including High Contrast, Bicep, Sasha, Soloman and Paul Kalkbrenner. This sounds like a great event for any old school ravers or new generations of movers and shakers. Get the glitter and neon glow sticks ready!  ‘iy_project’ sound and light installation, Hastings Pier and Promenade, 10 Sept

World-renowned light artist Chris Levine in collaboration with the Eden Project’s inventive Edenlab has created a unique event just over the border in Hastings – illuminating the townscape like never before with a spectacular sound and light installation. During the show between  8.00 and 10.00pm, high-powered lasers will diffract into geometric, organic and nebulae light forms and you can be in the thick of it at the end of the pier, or watch from the beach, promenade, East Hill or West Hill. Levine has collaborated with Kate Moss and Grace Jones and his work has been acclaimed internationally and shown at Buckingham Palace, the Royal Academy and Houses of Parliament. The event is Free, but booking is required for Pier viewing and a donation is suggested to the Pier charity. It kicks of the Root 1066 arts festival.

My mini muddies love the Jim Carrey film version so will definitely try and take them to this production – watch out for my review on opening night! Painter and decorator by day, Mr Popper spends his time dreaming of Antarctic adventures. He is astounded when one day a packing crate arrives on his doorstep, out of which waddles a penguin!
