20 Afternoon Teas

Looking for a sweet treat for your mother, mother-in-law or your good self this Mothering Sunday? Here's our guide to the best...

Mother’s Day is fast approaching so we have been sampling scones and scoffing cakes (all in the interests of research you understand!) to bring you the Muddy round up of some of the best places to indulge in some spoilation on Sunday 22 March.

Eastwell Manor, Ashford

Take your mum (or book a table for yourself?) to Afternoon Tea at Eastwell Manor, dine in their Grand Oak-Panelled Lounge overlooking the garden. Steeped in royal heritage and surrounded by elegant scenery, Eastwell Manor is the perfect place to spend an afternoon. Enjoy a selection of freshly cut mini sandwiches and savouries before tucking into warm scones with clotted cream and jam, finish off with sweet treats and what about a glass of Gusborne English sparkling wine? While the Afternoon Tea on Sun 22 March is now fully booked – give it as a gift on Mother’s Day with the promise that you’ll take her another time of her choosing. Way to win brownie (and scone) points!

The Ambrette, Margate or Canterbury Restaurants

Here on Muddy we love something a bit different – and of high quality – so this ticks all the boxes. The Ambrette in Margate was the town’s first ever Michelin recommendation in 2010, and sits pretty with sea views over Margate sands. There’s also a Canterbury sister restaurant in the heart of the city centre and both are foodie destinations for traditional Indian dishes with an exciting and innovative twist. Enjoy an Indian Inspired Afternoon Tea prepared fresh each morning (they require at least 24 hours notice for afternoon tea reservations). The menu includes delights such as Cinnamon and sultana scones, Cocktail samosa and Masala trio cheese bites. High Chai, £35.99 for two; Champagne High Chai, £65.99 for two; Prosecco High Chai, £46.99.

Hever Castle
Say thank you in style and celebrate Mother’s Day at Hever Castle with their Classic Afternoon Tea in the elegant Gunthrie Pavillion Restaurant situated in the Italian Garden overlooking the Lake. The Classic Afternoon Tea offers freshly prepared finger sandwiches along with a mouth-watering variety of cakes and desserts and each guest will be treated to a complimentary glass of sparkling wine or elderflower fizz. £27.50 pp. Or only available on Mothering Sunday, go all out and book Hever Castle’s Luxury Afternoon Tea which will be held in the beautiful wood panelled Tudor Suite in the Astor Wing adjoining the Castle. In addition to the finger sandwiches, and sweet treats, you can also enjoy a demitasse of tomato and fennel soup and fruit tartlets. £38 pp.

This obviously isn’t a list of the best that Kent has to offer in afternoon tea as Fir Tree House Tearooms in Penshurst aren’t on the list!

Hi Nici – thanks for the recommendation! All our lists are never completely finite of course, as there will always be further suggestions… Another excuse for a cream tea then! xA
