Whether it’s a Christmas or New Year party you’re going to, it’s the time of year that accentuates all those gaps in your winter wardrobe, right? And I for one, recently had a realisation – somewhere between running around after the Mudlets, work and Christmas shopping for the entire family I had completely lost my style mojo. Even if there were hidden gems in my bulging wardrobe, in the last minute whirlwind of getting ready (taxi’s here in 10 mins!), I could never find them. Sound familiar? Time to bring the big guns in. Enter Siobhan Young, personal stylist, and founder of Wellstyled.
Siobhan has been styling women for over 10 years and offers advice on everything from personal shopping to a wardrobe detox and from at-home style parties to corporate events. And best of all, she’s mastered the magic combination of making you feel good about yourself while also offering straight-talking fashion savvy.
In order to give me a real flavour of how she works, Siobhan came to my house and gave me an express wardrobe detox. This bit’s very therapeutic and it becomes so easy to weed out all those decade old ‘just in case’ items of clothing once someone you trust tells you to ditch them. In my bulging, never-throw-anything-away, wardrobe I couldn’t see the wood for the trees – or tops for the trousers. Have you ever thought of putting your summer clothes in a suitcase out the way during winter? Nope, me neither. But I will now. And what about organising your clothes into colour categories? Er, well I might get around to that eventually. I certainly see her point. It’s less time consuming than never being able to find anything.
She also suggested combinations I’d never thought of before and crucially helped me pick out my two ‘key’ winter party pieces, above. My trusty leather leggings (bought in the January Sale a couple of years ago and an investment that’s been worth every penny) and a sequin pencil skirt. These were items I already had, but didn’t know what best to wear with them.
Then Siobhan met me in Tunbridge Wells and gave me the personal shopping experience. She picks out the items that she thinks will suit your preferred style an suggests some others that you might not pull off the rail if left to your own devices. First we headed to Alexandra Boutique on the High Street where they are currently having a Closing Down SALE. Do not miss this! There are so many gorgeous one-off items in here at slashed down prices. These are the kind of clothes that might cost a little bit more but you will get more value for money/wear out of them (and *crosses fingers* compliments) than any fast fashion item.
Then it was off to Kitch (Muddy Award Winner – Best Boutique in Kent) to try on their amazing selection of gilets (still a wardrobe must-have apparently) and then this gorgeous, super-soft cashmere twist on a Christmas jumper, above.
I also *love, loved* both these two navy velvet classics, above, that would add class to any Christmas get-together (who cares if you’re the one slumped under the mistletoe on your twelfth G & T?…) Kitch also has the all important accessories – control tights and slips as well as cute on-trend pendants and bracelets, below.
Siobhan suggested items I should buy and also outfit combinations out of my existing clothes that I’d never even considered putting together. Like putting my sequin skirt (bit of glam) together with a roll-neck jumper (to dress it down) which I wore out to the pub (what, no jeans?!) And here I am off to Christmas drinks in the leather trousers and lace top, above.
There is something very uplifting about getting someone to edit your wardrobe – we all know that less is more, but it’s not always easy knowing where to start. I think if I was going to give one of my friends a gift experience (you can buy a gift voucher) it would be this. At the end of the morning I was asking myself why I hadn’t done it years ago. I feel confident that the short-term investment of a wardrobe detox will, in the long-term, save me money and time (time, I tell you, the most illusive thing of all!!). What’s more, it was also sooo much fun.
3 hour Wardrobe Detox or a 3 hour Personal Shopping Experience each costs £195.
