Race day ready

For a day at the races, you'll want to look your most stylish. Make it to the winners' enclosure at Lingfield Park's Spring Ladies' Day on Fri 8 Mar with our race day inspiration.

Fancy a day at the races? Sunshine (we can hope), fizz, fun and perhaps a little flutter. It’s a day out that just keeps on giving. And even more so at this year’s Fabulous Fiz Friday at celebrating International Women’s Day at Lingfield Park Racecourse on Friday 8 March because as well as a glass of fizz, the package also includes a complimentary entrance ticket to Spring Ladies’ Day on Fri 3 May.

And – sound the klaxons – we’ve got 10 pairs of tickets to giveaway. Head to the pinned post on our Facebook page to be in for a chance of winning

Then, of course, comes the thorny issue of what to wear. Soooo many factors to consider – racecourse rules, comfort, hat or no hat, are fascinators still considered fabulous or a fashion fail?

Race days can be hard to get right – particularly if there are no strict guidelines. It’s fab opportunity to get dressed up and even wear a hat, if you fancy it – it’s tradition, don’t fight it. Also remember this is a day event, you’re not dressing for a night at the Ritz. My advice? Keep the fake tan light, the hemlines long and go have a bit fun…

And since you’ll have two race days to dress for, here’s some fashion inspiration.

Go classic

Clockwise from top left: Hoop earrings, Mango, £9.99; Green polka dot waist-tie midi dress, & Other Stories, £89, Natural handbag, Zara, £29.99; Sloan leather mules, Asos, £45; Tia lilac coat, Hobbs, £279

The milk chocolate spotted dress worked a treat for Julia Roberts when she went to the races in Pretty Woman, and despite the fact it was almost 30 years ago, the look is still a good one. Spots are popping all over this season,  It comes courtesy of stylist Nina Victoria, who has teamed this pretty mint green spotty number from & Other Stories with fresh white accessories, adding a pop of lilac to help keek the chill away.

Understated glam

Clockwise from top left: Kiomi classic coat, Zalando, £104.99; D Ring cropped trousers, Top Shop, £46; Red bead and tassel drop earrings, Top Shop, £14; Small leather saddle bag, Cos, £89; Criss cross slide sandals, & Other Stories, £79; Ribbed top, Mango, £35.99

Taking an almost head-to-toe approach is a clever way to wear colour, but it’s the splashes of red that really makes this baby blue combo pop. Stylist Nina Victoria has paired these culottes with low slip-on sandals so not only will you look gorgeous but you’ll also be comfy. And the red coat and earring just help to tie it all together. Just add a cross body bag and you’re good to go.

Jumpsuit for joy

Clockwise from top left: Braided net bag, Mango, £19.99; Rosalie cross back jumpsuit, Reiss, £225; Asos simple fascinator headband, £10; Penley crocodile slingback heels in croc print, Asos, £35; Tina black trench, Hobbs, £199.

Who doesn’t love a jumpsuit. They’re the easiest items of clothing to wear ever – unless you need the loo, and then you have to practically strip naked to have a wee. Meh! It’s worth it. This jumpsuit is from Reiss – they have a great selection – and I honestly believe there is a grown up baby grow for all shapes and sizes. Mustard yellow is one of the big colour trends for SS19 – but if you’re anything like me and find it saps all your colour, the best way to wear it is on your feet. Drape this sleek black trench around your should shoulders, and you’re sorted no matter what the weather

Go wild

Clockwise from top left: Fedora hat, Reiss, £60; Asos Design bias cut leopard print cami maxi dress, £48; Asos Design Pivot slingback heels, £35; Black leather jacket, Reiss, £325; Asos Design clutch, £12

Some trends last a season, but the animal print looks like it’s going to last a lifetime. And if you make it a leopard print maxi, a less liberal application of fake tan is required, multitude of sins are hidden and you can wear them with flats (or not!!). Add a pop of colour, a light leather jacket, funky hat and you’re on your way.

Fabulous Fizz Friday – International Women’s Day All Weather Racing is at Lingfield Park on Fri 8 March. Gates open at 12.40pm and the first race is at 2.10pm.
