KIDS: Try this!
Target Shooting School is rolling out classes across west Kent - including brilliant half term courses. We just had to give it a try and it really hit the mark!
Looking for something different to do with the kids that will build confidence and concentration skills? Target shooting is a fun, accessible and fast-growing sport. And I’d heard brilliant things about Target Shooting School which is rolling out classes across West Kent – so we just had to give it a try…
The classes are run by Malcolm West who has years of experience and opened his first 3 classes in Kent in September 2018. In just 18 months they have doubled the number of classes.
You’ll find Target Shooting School venues in Kent at Tunbridge Wells, Ashford, Hildenborough, Sevenoaks and St. Paul’s Cray.
It’s very relaxed (not intimidating at all) and most venues are village halls or scout huts that have been transformed with shooting targets and sheets for the session.
While it’s a friendly set-up, they’re serious about safety. Your child’s safety is the number one priority here and the necessary rules and routines are clearly explained and adhered to.
Malcolm and his colleague, Dom, both really know their stuff and are eager to share their enthusiasm and shooting experience.
WHEN TO GO
There are pre-term (during holidays) Introductory sessions – or (term time) Taster Classes so you can give it a go without committing to termly courses. All equipment is provided, and there are no additional costs
Thinking of giving it a try this half term? Book into the half term (17 to 21 Feb) activity week here. The five day course focuses on air rifle and pistol training and other target-based activities.
It builds from a get-to-know-you session and safety briefing to several hours shooting each day. It is a practical, hands-on course, with almost all of the week being spent on the range. But you can just go for the day – there are Day and Week tickets available.
WHO’S IT FOR
Target shooting classes are equally suitable for girls and boys age 8 to 18. Great for self-confidence, self-discipline, team-work and building friendships.
Malcolm is rightly proud of the fact that as a county Kent now has its first ever Junior Air Rifle Squad where they now have 4 teams competing in the National Smallbore Rifle Associations Inter-County Leagues. 8 of the 12 squad members are from Target Shooting School Classes. Pretty good endorsement then.
Looking for a unique party idea? Win yourself some serious mum-brownie-points by booking your kid’s birthday bash at Target Shooting School. If you’re interested, get in touch with Malcolm about creating a bespoke event – the format of which will be much like a Taster Session, so including the fundamentals of the sport and ending up with a shooting competition. Now who’s not going to love that?
My son loves his sport and is pretty good at trying new things. But equally I think a child who isn’t necessarily as confident in team sports or who might want to build confidence would really love this too.
I’m not surprised to learn it’s equally popular with both girls and boys. It’s also accessible to children with varying special educational needs (disabled and able-bodied children alike). I could see immediately how, with regular practice, target shooting would increase skill and self-discipline – and as a result would build self-esteem.
If you’re looking for something different – or your child has tried several things and nothing has quite stuck – then definitely worth a Taster Session to see if they like it.
It absolutely hit the mark with my son. And I know my daughter would also love a shot. So we’ll be back again soon.
