Weekend Escapes

How lucky are we to have England’s largest winemaker, Chapel Down, right on our doorstep? With vineyards across the region they produce a range of the most exceptional sparkling and still wines – that have deservedly won them world-wide recognition as well as a shower of international awards and accolades.

Chapel Down Winery itself is a stunning site, just outside the pretty Kentish town of Tenterden, and open to visitors throughout the year. A day trip not to be missed – even if you don’t know your Bacchus from your Pinot Noir – a tour of the vineyard, winery and shop makes a fun and memorable way to familiarise yourself with the best of British.

With a wide selection of Experiences on offer – stroll through the vines in the sunshine, relax in the Herb Garden, visit their swanky deli bursting with local produce and view their tasting room called The Wine Sanctuary. Take a guided tour with a tutored tasting of their award-winning range of sparkling and still wines plus have some lunch in the smart on-site restaurant, The Swan.

If you’re simply after a pleasant stroll, pick up a map at the shop, which details a number of trails that criss-cross the 23-acre estate. The shop also sells locally produced biscuits, crackers, cheeses, chutneys and the like to match your wine. The friendly staff will lead you through a free mini-tasting if you can’t decide.

Plus, they have launched a range of spirits – including the first ever gin made from grape skins – with a choice of Bacchus Gin or the pink Pinot Noir variety. The gins and vodka, made using the finest botanicals, are perfect for cocktail enthusiasts, imbued with the same exciting, clean, fresh vibrancy as their wines.

With exceptional quality gift boxes, virtual wine tasting masterclasses or experience vouchers – there’s loads of inspo here for the perfect present, that also supports local.

A visit to Chapel Down would delight even the most discerning of connoisseurs – or be the perfect entry-level experience to anyone new to the wine scene. Chin-chin!
