The Bao Baron, Folkestone

The Folkestone street food scene has a new superstar - and these Pan Asian inspired dishes now have a stylish, laid-back restaurant to call home. Add this one to your 'must-try' list!

Weekend Escapes

THE LOWDOWN

The Bao Baron is a Pan-Asian street food restaurant which also blends in the use of key seasonal Kentish produce. Specialising in bao buns and ramen – and yes, you’ve got to try everything from the buns to broth – all the food on offer here is prepared in house and served fresh to order.

By following the seasons and utilising local suppliers, they are able to provide a frequently changing menu that celebrates both the variety of Asian cuisines and the versatility of Kentish produce. Inclusivity is at the heart of what they do in the kitchen here and they are proud to offer a tasty selection of vegan, dairy free and gluten free dishes throughout the menu.

THE STORY

A family run business, The Bao Baron is a product of the first national lockdown, established by local chef Greig Hughes and partner Daisy Wootton. Greig was already established as a baker at the seaside town’s ever-rising Docker Bakery, then, with this new venture he has also now become known as The Bao Baron.

Folkestone – and in particular the Harbour Arm – already has a strong reputation as the home for exceptional street food. And when Greig married his love and knowledge for bread – with a lot of creativity and imagination – a foodie sensation was born. Beginning as a side hustle to help ends meet during the uncertainties of the pandemic, its success and feedback was so overwhelming that the business simply continued to grow.

NEW RESTAURANT

From a tiny pop-up event tucked away in the Harbour Arm corridor, to a bustling lockdown takeaway hidden in a taproom on Tontine Street, The Bao Baron came full circle as a hugely popular food hut in the Harbour Arm East Yard during the Summer of 2021.

By Autumn, a year on from its first pop-up, The Bao Baron finally took root as a permanent establishment in Guildhall Street. The melt-in-your-mouth, lighter-than-air buns perfectly compliment the flavoursome and carefully curated fillings. From Lamb, pomegranate molasses, purple french beans and pickled ginger to Miso aubergine, spiced beans and pickled carrot (just to give you an idea), you will be begging for me. Its cost-effective weekday menu comes with our full recommendation – two courses for £20 or three for £24 and we think you’ll want to do the latter…

The setting in which to enjoy these relaxed yet exceptionally well executed dishes is suitably laid back and stylish too. Making this new eatery the latest in a line of Folkestone foodie sensations. Add this one to your ‘must-try’ list!
