The Kentish Hare, Bidborough

Muddy says: Hop, skip and jump over to this award-winning Bidborough pub where the interiors are stylish but food is the real star.

With 2 AA Rosettes, and a whole host of other awards under its belt since James and Chris Tanner saved the pub from demolition just a few years ago, The Kentish Hare is a real foodie gem.

The Tanner brothers (who are well known in the industry and have published several cookbooks) pride themselves on top quality local produce cooked with skill (simply presented), and served by knowledgeable, friendly and professional staff who offer diners the option of a light bite or a full meal.

So what’s their story? Starting young, Chris worked first in the kitchen of a local restaurant aged just 12. His talent has taken him since to Le Gavroche in London, and further afield to New York and France under the Roux brothers, before returning to England to open the three Rosette-winning Kitley Hotel in Devon. Teaming up with James was the next logical step.

James developed his experience in a number of restaurants, before arriving at the Roux brothers’ Lake Placid Lodge in upstate New York. Back in England, he headed to the two Michelin-starred Lettonie in Bath before returning to Kent. James has appeared on numerous television shows and currently holds a regular cooking slot on ITV’s Lorraine. James is also the Chef/Director for Hotel Olympia.

So that’s their credentials sorted. But what of the vibe? Well the interior is large, light and contemporary – stylishly designed with the hare theme and quirky furnishings dotted around the place. There’s lots of pockets of different space, which we really like in our eateries. It’s all about choice, right? You’d be just at home here having a grown up meal out with the mother-in-law/a group of girlfriends in the main dining room, or feeding your kids in the more relaxed bar area.

The kids menu is spot on, there’s a beer garden, Fish’n’Chip FryDay and even better all kids under 5 eat free. Whatcha waiting for?
