With a highly sought-after Michelin Bib Gourmand to their name, voted Best Pub in Kent in the Muddy Stilettos Award (2019) and a whole host of other accolades under its belt, this pub has come a long way since James and Chris Tanner saved it from demolition several years ago.

The icing on the cake followed with the announcement of the Estrella Damm Top 50 Gastro Pub Awards. After receiving ‘Best Newcomer’ in 2016 the Kentish Hare has consistently been on the list and this year jumped 15 places and now listed at number 13. That’s quite some achievement in a few years. Better get over there and see what all the fuss is about!

The Tanner brothers (who are well known in the industry and have published several cookbooks) pride themselves on top quality local produce cooked with skill (simply presented), and served by knowledgeable, friendly and professional staff who offer diners the option of a light bite or a full meal.

So what’s their story? Starting young, Chris worked first in the kitchen of a local restaurant aged just 12. His talent has taken him since to Le Gavroche in London, and further afield to New York and France under the Roux brothers, before returning to England to open the three Rosette-winning Kitley Hotel in Devon. Teaming up with James was the next logical step.

James developed his experience in a number of restaurants, before arriving at the Roux brothers’ Lake Placid Lodge in upstate New York. Back in England, he headed to the two Michelin-starred Lettonie in Bath before returning to Kent.

So that’s their credentials sorted. But what of the vibe? Well the interior is large, light and contemporary – stylishly designed with the hare theme and quirky furnishings dotted around the place.

There’s lots of pockets of different space, which we really like in our eateries. It’s all about choice, right? You’d be just at home here having a grown up meal out with the mother-in-law/a group of girlfriends in the main dining room, or feeding your kids in the more relaxed bar area.

The kids menu is spot on, there’s a beer garden and Fish’n’Chip FryDay. Whatcha waiting for?
