The Salutation

Muddy says: The Salutation, is a stunning country-house sitting in the heart of Sandwich, a pretty town on the Kent coastline. The location, elegance and warmth of the place make it the perfect escape whatever the weather.

The Salutation, is a stunning country-house sitting in the heart of Sandwich, a pretty town on the Kent coastline. Under the new management of John and Dorothy Fothergill it has just been awarded the Romantic Hotel of The Year in the Good Hotel Guide (2019). This Queen Anne-style house, designed by Lutyens, is luxury boutique hotel, fine-dining restaurant, magnificent gardens, top-notch café, plant nursery and stylish shop all rolled into one.

Head Chef Shane Hughes creates stunning menus that celebrate the finest ingredients from the Garden of England. Spread across 3 separate dining spaces, the kitchen offers lunch and dinner seven days a week from toothsome lunch menus to (ooh-la-la) à la carte and even tasting menus in the evening. For the true foodie, there’s even a blind menu served in the Tasting Room, comprised of whatever the chef is particularly smitten by.

Stroll around the garden paths or treat yourself to afternoon tea, available everyday in the Drawing Room or on the East Terrace if it’s a lovely day (again all designed by the Head Chef Hughes). You can expect cakes, sandwiches, scones, biscuits, fancies all made from scratch and served alongside a wide choice of bagged and loose leaf teas.

Explore the area (you can go seal watching by boat off Sandwich, just saying…) or never leave the grounds. Take Afternoon Tea on the terrace. Toast by the Drawing Room fire. Dine at the Chef’s Table or just wallow in bed. It’s easy to make yourself at home at this gorgeous getaway.
