The Small Holding offers wonderful home-grown and reared produce, hence the name. We are not alone in our love of this amazing eatery (which won Best Restaurant in Kent in our Muddy Stilettos Awards in 2019). Food critics from all over the country have been drooling into their plates at The Small Holding, with chef owner Will Devlin recently recognised as Chef to Watch in the Good Food Guide 2020 and credited with ‘an instinctive feel for food’.
This local gem is run by brothers Will and Matt Devlin from the No Fixed Abode restaurant pop-ups. Will Devlin is one of Kent’s most exciting chefs who you might recognise from Thackerays and The Windmill in Hollingbourne and Matt is a great knowledge on the wine/drink side of the restaurant and will match your food choices with the best wine or craft beer options. Er, hello dream team!
Situated in one acre of beautiful Kent countryside with the mission of growing, rearing and foraging as much of the food that’s cooked as possible being at the heart of its ethos. You’ll find it tucked down a country lane in Kilndown, (between Lamberhurst and Cranbrook). On the former site of The Globe and Rainbow pub it’s off the beaten track yet easy enough to get to, not being far from the A21.
There’s a sunny decked area overlooking the smallholding at the front, so it’s perfect for weekend walkers and inside there’s a cosy bar, wooden floorboards and old farm equipment decorating the walls. Kids are welcome but the surroundings and menu are fairly grown up. Makes the perfect date-night option and definitely one for the foodies.
