The Zero Waste Company, Tunbridge Wells

This store had the local community behind it from the beginning and not only has a shop, but a Zero Waste Kitchen that works with local Tunny Wells partners to combat any potential food waste by taking fresh produce that would otherwise be thrown away, and making it into delicious, healthy and nutritious food. This is sold in the brilliant vegetarian café. They also offer bespoke celebration cakes made to order – perfect for a special occasion!

This store opened its doors in October 2020, and offers a range of make up and homecare products, including their own soap and bath bombs, alongside refill food and cleaning products. An art gallery, gift boxes and their own clothing brand, Retrosential, can also be found in the shop.

Alongside that she sells food items to stock up the larder and a full list can be seen on her Facbook page. Heath Stores, Horsmonden

We love this award-winning village store, with a deli and bakery counter, lots of local produce and plastic-free goods section. This store really is at the heart of the community and big on supporting local – and support sustainability as much as possible. From their locally sourced, packaging-free fruit and veg to their Refill station (for pasta, rice, beans, pulses, cooking oils, flour, sugar etc) and milk dispenser this is a local gem making an effort to be kinder to the environment.

The Little Green Pantry, Lamberhurst

Speaking of hidden gems, this cute little shop recently opened – where they source local ‘green’ produce, have a refillable milk station and second-hand items along with providing community workshops plus there’s an up-cycled cabinet called ‘The Little Free Library’ full of free children’s books for swapping too. Customers buy and collect their glass milk bottles from the Little Green Pantry, and once they have been used customers clean the bottles and return them. Used bottles are collected twice a week by Hinxden Dairy and sterilised and reused.

Living in Medway, I have had to travel quite a way to find a decent refill place. Naked Products has meant I have something close by and the people there are super friendly too!
