Here’s how to make the most of your time off in June (where did half the year go?). We’ve tapped the barometer, and done a little sun dance for you, but just in case the weather doesn’t play ball, here’s your rain or shine guide to good times in Kent this month…

The Festival Theatre at Hever Castle, Tues 1 & Sun 13 June
For your guaranteed summer of fun, you’ll want to know about The Festival Theatre which is an open air venue set in the gardens of Hever Castle. They plan music acts, operas, films, plays and family shows every year all summer long and this year will be no different! They have a whole calendar of exciting events and this June you can expect, brand-new musical adaption of The Further Adventures of Dr DoLittle (Tues 1 June, 2pm), a fun comedy act for the whole family; Bright Buoy Presents: Blue Planet III (Sun 13 June, 2:30pm) and drama with Shakespeare’s Macbeth (Sun 13 June, 7pm). Port Lympne Reserve, open throughout June

Aprons at the ready! Try something new this month and discover hidden gem Kent Cookery School in the stunning setting of the Mersham-le-Hatch Estate, near Ashford. They have a huge range of workshops and courses every month which book up extremely quickly. This month they have; The Bread Course, Curry Club, Couples Cooking, Weber American BBQ – to name a few! Le Cabaret Fantastique, Assembly Hall Theatre, Fri 4 June

Discovery Week, Hever Castle, Until 6 June
This Half Term, join Hever Castle’s Discovery Week! Learn about inventors, discover ancient artefacts and find out more about physics and archaeology in 3 different shows where you can meet Victorian and Edwardian scientific explorers as they debunk myths and explore inventions from history. Or get your hands dirty with an archaeological dig, what will you find buried in the sand and mud?
When you’ve finished discovering, enjoy one of their Adventure Playgrounds which include Acorn Dell, a natural playground for toddlers and children up to 7+ year olds with its 2-metre high living willow structure, giant sandpit, mound with tunnels to clamber in and a climbing frame. Or for the older ones, there’s Tudor Towers (7-14 years) with its own moat, drawbridge and three turrets. Plenty of fun to be had!
Hidden Heroines, The Historic Dockyard, Chatham, Until 31 Oct
This landmark venue makes for a great day out, celebrating everything associated with the great age of sail. The exhibition is all really interactive, there’s always new stuff happening and with three massive, MASSIVE warships to explore – what more do you want?!
The Historic Dockyard (which you may already recognise from Call The Midwife) is an 80 acre site and included in your ticket (which lasts for 12 months by the way so you can keep having fun!) is 2 guided tours, 3 historic warships, temporary exhibitions, galleries, gardens, indoor and outdoor play areas and much more.

Garden Wildlife Week, Leeds Castle, Until 6 June
We’re so lucky to have some of the UK’s most incredible landmarks right on our doorstep here in Kent. Often described as ‘the loveliest castle in the world’ Leeds Castle‘s grounds, gardens, playground and takeaway kiosks. are now open! Walk around the grounds, visit the beautiful gardens, take part in their new Wildlife Trail for May Half Term and head to their Adventure Playgrounds for a day filled with lots of fun.
Get your magnifying glasses and green fingers ready for fun filled outdoor garden themed activities in celebration of National Garden Wildlife Week. Go on a ‘Bug Safari’ and discover all types of bugs and insects as you explore the Castle estate. Their Wildlife Trail will take you on a fun adventure through the grounds, following clues to find animal illustrations and hidden answers in order to complete the trail card. Show your dad just how much you love him with a wonderful family day out to Hever Castle on Father’s Day Weekend. See a display of vehicles from famous F1 champion the late John Surtees as well as displays of cars through the ages. New for 2021, is their axe throwing contest with a fun target practice! Black Deer Festival, Fri 25 – Sun 27 June 2021
For the third year running, the UK’s only Americana and country music festival is back. It promises once again to be all kinds of swing jive and Texas Two Stepping cool. Black Deer will take place on this June in Eridge Park, Britain’s oldest deer park.
This family-friendly festival celebrates the best of a bygone rural age and way of life, it has sections dedicated to music; food (think classic American smokehouse BBQ); motors (showcasing all the best mean machines from classic American trucks to custom vintage motorcycles); traders (get loads of Black Deer Mercantile offering authentic wares from quality textiles and original printed posters to handmade surfboards and banjos) and plenty of fun for the young folk!
