Review: The Dog at Wingham
Tucked in the village of Wingham, The Dog is a countryside gem. This award-winning gastro pub and boutique hotel offers the perfect blend of great food, cosy rooms, and rural charm. The Dog has a lot to bark about. Let’s dive in!
THE LOCATION
The Dog at Wingham ticks all the boxes when it comes to location. Wingham is a picturesque village that feels like a world away from the hustle and bustle, but with Canterbury, Deal, and Sandwich just a short drive away, it’s ideally placed for exploring the best of Kent.
Fancy a walk before or after your meal? The surrounding countryside offers plenty of scenic trails. Plus with 13 parking spaces, you’ll never need to worry about finding a spot (trust me, it’s a game-changer).
THE LOWDOWN
This dog-friendly gem truly stands out in the Kent countryside, effortlessly blending classic pub charm with modern flair. The award-winning gastro pub and boutique hotel strikes the perfect balance between relaxed dining and upscale comfort.
With eight uniquely styled rooms designed by Marilyn Bridgen, guests can enjoy a stylish and cosy retreat. From savoring locally sourced dishes and sipping on an impressive gin selection to unwinding in their beautifully crafted rooms, The Dog delivers a refined and welcoming experience.
The Dog has received many accolades over the years and more recently was included in the Estrella Damm Top 50 Gastropubs 2024 for the fifth year in a row – at the lofty number of 16! So if that isn’t more reason to visit, I don’t know what is.
THE VIBE
When you first step in, the pub features a series of inviting spaces and nooks, starting with cosy living room vibe at the entrance, moving into the main restaurant area with cowhide chairs and bar stools and then walking around the corner, behind the bar, you’ll find the spacious and open conservatory.
The interiors are adorned with plush furnishings, warm wooden tones, and stylish accents. But what sets it apart is its playful nod to its name, spot the adorable dog-themed decor which is cleverly integrated throughout the space. From quirky canine artwork to charming dog-themed knick-knacks.
Whether it’s the sun shining or a blustery winter day, they’ve got the vibe nailed. On warm days, their south-facing garden is the perfect place to soak up the rays with a gin and tonic in hand – make sure you try their impressive collection of 50 gins. If the weather’s less friendly, curl up by the cosy fire and relax with a pint of something local. This rural gem has it all.
SCOFF & QUAFF
At The Dog, food is serious business. Head Chef Robert Mantegna and his talented team craft seasonal dishes that showcase the best of British cuisine, using locally sourced ingredients. The Summer Tasting Menu, with five courses for £65, is worth every penny and if you’re a wine lover, why not upgrade to a wine flight?
The Tasting Menus at The Dog at Wingham change every season and offer a culinary adventure, showcasing the restaurant’s creativity and dedication to quality. Each dish is meticulously crafted by their talented chefs and highlights Kent’s rich bounty of produce and artisanal ingredients. So whether you’re a foodie or just love great food, this tasting menu is a must-try for a memorable dining experience.
Our foodie adventure started with the Chef’s amuse bouche which was gorgeously presented and tasted just as good. Tastebuds tingling and ready to begin, we indulged on the spiced tempura soft shell crab with sweetcorn relish and chipotle which had an amazing tangy taste and a bit of kick.
Next came the classic aged beef tartare, egg yolk with charred sourdough and whipped beef fat.
As the sun set, the soft candlelight took centre stage when our next course, the John dory with seaweed pressed potato and lemon verbena beurre blanc made an appearance.
My personal favourite course had to be the slow roasted pork belly, cumberland pithivier, house piccalilli and cider cream sauce. Oooof.
Lastly was the delicious desserts. Tahitian custard tart, brown butter ice cream, topped with honeycomb for that sweet crunch. As if we had space for anymore, our meal ended with a selection of ‘Dog Treats’ but rest assured there were no Bakers here.
Each dish was beautifully presented but the flavors will have you coming back for more. With a welcoming, family-run atmosphere (shoutout to owner Marc Bridgen and his interior designer mum, Marilyn), you’ll feel like a part of the family as soon as you step through the door.
THE STAY
Why just stop by for dinner when you can head upstairs and enjoy a luxurious night away? The Dog boasts eight individually styled rooms, all designed with Marilyn’s expert touch.
We stayed in Room 4, their spectacular Bridal suite which boasts a grand four-poster bed and a stunning vaulted beam ceiling that really made for that ‘wow’ moment when you first walk in. The Hypnos bed ensures a good night’s sleep and the en-suite shower room adds a touch of convenience. Pet-friendly and full of charm, this room is perfect for a romantic escape or a relaxing retreat in the picturesque Kent countryside.
After a restful night’s sleep, saunter on down for breakfast which is a leisurely affair served from 8am til 10am. Think smoked salmon and crème fraîche with scrambled eggs on toast, eggs benedict, full English or (my personal favourite) poached eggs and avocado on sourdough, all served in their garden or conservatory. There’s cereal, toast and jams on hand too should you want more. All washed down with fresh orange juice plus the usual teas and coffee.
You’ll find that there’s always a good deal on too, enjoy the full experience with dinner and bed & breakfast from just £100pp. You. Are. Welcome.

THE MUDDY VERDICT
GOOD FOR? It’s an excellent choice for day trippers, romantic getaways, special occasions, or even business stays with a charming twist.
NOT FOR? If you’re looking for a sleek, modern hotel experience, this place isn’t for you. The Dog offers a warm, inviting atmosphere rather than a swanky, high-end hotel vibe.
THE DAMAGE
Dinner, bed and breakfast packages start from £100pp (for the smaller rooms) leading up to £200pp (for the grandest room) which includes a three-course meal from the a la carte menu and breakfast in the morning and this is for 7 days a week. Which I would say is the dog’s bollocks.
