KENT
Fordwich Arms, Canterbury
Taking place at number 62 is our personal fave and even if you’re the slightest bit foodie, you’ve probably already heard of The Fordwich Arms. Firmly established as one of the best restaurant’s in the country, boasting a Michelin star and rave reviews from top food critics. Bought by Daniel and Natasha Smith in 2017, the pub is tucked away in the Kent town of Fordwich (officially England’s smallest town) near to Canterbury. Perfect for an intimate treat or celebratory experience, The Fordwich Arms is a great destination. We love the gorgeous 1930’s bar for its’ relaxed setting, cocktail selection, and cosy vibes. The oak panelled dining room has roaring open fires and for summer dining there is a pretty riverside garden. Go on, see what the fuss is all about.
Updown Farmhouse, Deal
Hello number 96! Updown Farmhouse is a beautiful restaurant with rooms set in a 17th century farmhouse within seven and a half acres of Kent countryside. The menu is filled with Italian influences aplenty, hyper-seasonal ingredients and with dishes like ossobuco and crab tagliolini, alongside many cooked over an open fire and steak night on Wednesday. It’s an idyllic location for a long lazy lunch or intimate dinner.
The Sportsman, Seasalter
It comes at no surprise to see this corker of a pub on the list, especially ranking at the mighty number of 29. The Sportsman consistently wins accolade after accolade but don’t dismiss it. They don’t buy into pretentiousness and there’s a really laid-back, relaxed atmosphere. When I visited the menu was simple and perfectly executed – the fish could not have tasted fresher (it’s right by the sea just outside Whitstable).
Setè, Margate
Last but certainly not least is Natalia Ribbe’s Margate restaurant and wine bar, Sète (pronounced set) coming in at number 99. Serving modern European cuisine with a strong French touch, you’ll find a natural wine bar in the front and a restaurant to the rear. The kitchen is overseen by Billy Stock and with a tiny team, the menu majors on contemporary takes on hearty French bistro classics.
