If you saw the recent announcement for colour authority Pantone’s Colour of the Year, you might have spotted that it looks a little familiar… That’s right, 2023’s official colour, Viva Magenta (Pantone 18-1750) is basically Muddy Stilettos pink!&nbsp;

Okay, technically Pantone calls it red – an “animated red that revels in pure joy, encouraging experimentation and self-expression without restraint”, in fact – but we’re sticking by pink. The balance of warmth and coolness takes it out of bright Barbiecore bubblegum or blue-toned fuchsia, but it’s just a smidge more playful than your standard crimson. Muddy’s not the only ones with our well-manicured fingers on the pulse – US designer Christopher John Rogers (Beyonce’s a fan) showcased plenty of magenta in his Resort 2023 collection (above), and we’ll be taking inspiration from his looks while it’s still flipping freezing outside. Think statement coats and tailored trews paired with knitwear in hot orange – although I reckon I’ll be saving the fascinator for wedding season.&nbsp;

Also jumping on the Viva Magenta train? Scared to take on some major magenta? Dip your toe in with accessories – this Tom Ford Bianca bag (£1,990) is spenny but spectacular, and will perk up your tried-and-true LBD in an instant.&nbsp;



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">BEAUTY</h2>

‘Cold girl beauty’ is all over TikTok right now – which is fortuitous, as it’s the perfect opportunity to test out magenta blush (not as scary as it sounds, trust me). Simply sweep a cream formula like Trinny London’s Lip2Cheek in Milly (above) up high on the cheekbones and brush the excess onto the tip of your nose and you’ll look like you’ve been out frolicking in the snow until you’re rosy-cheeked, rather than huddled on the sofa in your dressing gown.

We’ll be wearing magenta lips for party season too – a swipe of a velvety matte such as Charlotte Tilbury’s Matte Revolution formula in The Queen (above) is an easy-peasy take on the trend (and it hides red wine lips, bonus). Come warmer weather we’ll be swapping it out for a slick of a sheer fuchsia gloss instead.&nbsp;

If even tinted Vaseline gives you makeup fear, then why not try a little magenta mani instead? This Hermès Nail Enamel in 43 Rose Incarnat is such a perfect Muddy pink that I’m gifting it to myself this Christmas – talk about a stylish stocking stuffer.&nbsp;

There’s nothing like a little magenta to liven up a living room, and it’ll work perfectly as a bright pop of colour against neutrals like grey, navy or sand. Next has certainly got the memo; their Emporium collection, due to drop in January, features all kinds of magenta accessories, like throw pillows and blankets to give your bedroom a little Pantone perk up.&nbsp;

At beginner level, try something like velvet cushions for the sofa (I like&nbsp;<a href="https://www.mintandmay.co.uk/products/fuchsia-velvet-cushion?currency=GBP&amp;utm_medium=cpc&amp;utm_source=google&amp;utm_campaign=Google%20Shopping&amp;gclid=CjwKCAiAs8acBhA1EiwAgRFdw511hkFw3rjpgklzhnLI968g2jTTJQmkWMKsfued9zSnwxgHqNZTTxoCEksQAvD_BwE" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">this one from Mint &amp; May</a>, £24) or a lampshade paired with a gold or glass base (<a href="https://www.grahamandgreen.co.uk/tulip-pink-velvet-lamp-shades" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">try these from Graham &amp; Green</a>&nbsp;on for size, from £78). For a step up, a piece of occasional furniture like this Cuverella velvet chair in Cherry Pink Velvet from Audenza (above, £785). How good does it look against lush dark green?&nbsp;

If your style is more industrial than Art Deco, and you’d rather eat your hat than scatter velvet pillows everywhere, a hot pink storage locker like this Midi from Mustard (£319) could be just the update for you. It pairs beautifully with (whaddya know) mustard and pale pink, but would look fab against everything from poured concrete to retro floral wallpaper. Speaking of which…
