Kent and East Sussex Railway

Get ready to step back in time and embark on a delightful journey with the Kent and East Sussex Railway (K&ESR), one of the UK’s most enchanting heritage railways

THE LOWDOWN

All aboard! Whether you’re a history buff, a rail enthusiast, or just in need of a scenic escape, the K&ESR offers an experience that’s brimming with charm, nostalgia, and a dash of adventure.

The tale of the Kent and East Sussex Railway begins in the bustling days of the late 19th century, when the railway network was expanding rapidly across Britain. With a vision to connect Robertsbridge and Tenterden, the railway was designed to transport everything from coal to passengers. Construction kicked off in 1892, and the line proudly opened its doors to the public on March 1, 1900.

Fast forward to the mid-20th century, and like many railways, the K&ESR faced tough times with the rise of cars and lorries. Passenger numbers dwindled, and the last regular service ran on January 1, 1961. But hold onto your hats, not long after a band of passionate railway enthusiasts decided the line deserved a second chance and in 1974, the railway was reborn as a heritage line.

THE JOURNEY

Hop aboard and prepare for a whimsical ride through the heart of Kent and East Sussex. The K&ESR takes you on a 10-mile journey through idyllic countryside, where rolling hills and quaint villages unfold before your eyes. Each station along the route has its own unique personality, ready to transport you back in time.

The K&ESR boasts a fantastic collection of both steam and diesel engines so picture yourself chugging along behind a vintage steam engine, with the hissing of the engine and the rhythmic clatter of wheels on tracks setting the perfect nostalgic scene. And for those who fancy a more modern twist, the diesel engines, though newer, are just as fascinating and add variety to the experience.

Your journey begins at Tenterden Town Station, a Victorian gem where you can grab a cuppa at the charming tea room, browse the quirky gift shop, and take a stroll through the museum before you set off. You’ll then make your way past Rolvenden Station which is a picturesque stop, featuring a beautifully restored platform and traditional station house. Then there’s Northiam Station with its scenic beauty. Your journey ends at Bodiam but the fun doesn’t stop there! When you disembark there’s a hop garden, hoppers hut and the historic Cavell Van to explore. Each stop along the line adds to the delightful experience, offering a mix of history and stunning views.

EVENTS

The Kent and East Sussex Railway isn’t just about a pleasant ride – it’s about making memories! Throughout the year, the railway hosts a range of lively events and special excursions. One of the highlights is the annual Railway in Wartime event which is a fantastic throwback to the 1940s, with vintage military vehicles, period costumes, and wartime music creating an immersive experience.
