Samphire, Whitstable

For exceptional Sunday lunches and a delicious menu we love this independent family run Bistro in the heart of buzzy Whitstable.

Heading to Whitstable for a day trip or mini break, or fancy somewhere gorgeous for a date night or brunch? May we introduce the award winning Samphire bistro.

THE LOWDOWN

This local gem was Whitstable’s first bistro and is conveniently situated in the centre of town and just metres from the sea. With a rustic, casual vibe and Art Deco Exterior it has a (rightly deserved) reputation for its’ outstanding seasonal menu comprising local fish, seafood and locally sourced ingredients.

The team behind Samphire are passionate about using the best of Kent produce from local suppliers and it is no surprise it has rave reviews with their chef credentials. Owner George Begg trained as a chef in Australia in the 90s and then moved to London as an Executive Chef. After moving to Whitstable in 2004 he spotted an empty shop close to the beach and from there Samphire was born. Head Chef Mark O’Brien hails from Dublin and is passionate about live fire cookery, animal butchery and whole fish. He has worked at The Dairy and Zebra Riding Club in London and is a regular at barbecue festivals The Big Grill and Meatopia.

THE FOOD

With a chalkboard menu dedicated to local fish, meat and seasonal vegetables, choose from the best oysters, crustaceans and seafood, plus delicious Kentish meats and vegetarian options. Favourites include Rye Bay scallops, Samphire’s fish pie and aged beef porterhouse. Wash this down with wine or a cocktail from the extensive drinks menu.

Brunch is served at the weekends and there is a mouthwatering menu. Think Turkish eggs, croque monsieur, eggs Benedict or house granola with a set yoghurt and compote.

Samphire’s Sunday lunch is not to be missed and truly exceptional. Start with a mackerel pate or perhaps Creole mussels and then choose from one of the mouthwatering seasonal options. We love the beef rump or pork belly. There is also a delicious grilled striped bass with lemon caper butter. Wrap this up with a warm apple crumble or sticky toffee pudding before an afternoon stroll on the beach. A feasting menu is also available at £45 per person (for a minimum of 4 people) and can be arranged in advanced.

This local bistro with its’ outstanding food and fabulous location in the heart of Whitstable is definitely one to visit.
