The Powell-Cotton Museum, Birchington

Budding geographers, historians and archeologists will love a visit to The Powell-Cotton Museum. Set in 10 acres of woodlands and gardens, with lots of interactive fun, this is a great day out for all the family.

THE LOWDOWN

Looking for somewhere new to visit with the children? The Powell-Cotton Museum in Birchington is a hidden gem, situated in 10 acres of woodland and gardens.

There is something for all the family to enjoy, with the Grade II listed Quex House and the Museum housing unique natural history dioramas of African and Asian animals and wildlife. There is also a huge selection of interesting world-culture objects and local archaeology from the Thanet coastline and a fabulous programme of events.

THE COLLECTIONS

Most of the Museum’s collection originates from the African and Asian continents. With a mind boggling 6,500 mammal specimens and 20,000 world culture objects, there really is plenty to catch the imagination with thousands of photographs and documents in the archive. Budding archeologists and geographers will also love the 8,000 local finds from the Thanet coastline.

WHAT’S ON

We love the interactive programme of events on offer here. Try your hand at botanical printing, join a storytelling session, discover the Japanese collection and join the blossom trail. The Museum Movie Magic weekend promises some great activities for all the family, including creating your own movie poster or becoming a director.

Visit on 25 August for the Open Air Cinema to watch Mamma Mia under the stars. The Powell-Cotton what’s on page has an updated listing of events, times and booking information.

LEARNING

The Museum has a great learning programme for home educators, children with SEND requirements and schools. There are home educator days for home educating families to visit the Museum, plus a loans box service for UK schools.
