THE LOWDOWN
Looking for somewhere new to visit with the children? Quex House & Gardens, home of the Powell-Cotton Museum in Birchington is a hidden gem, set within 8 acres of woodland and heritage gardens.
There is something for all the family to explore, with the Grade II listed Quex House, and the Museum housing unique natural history dioramas of African and Asian animals and wildlife. There is also a huge selection of interesting world-culture objects alongside local archaeology from the Thanet coastline. With a lively programme of family-friendly events throughout the year, every visit offers something new to see, learn and enjoy together.
THE COLLECTIONS
Most of the Museum’s collection originates from the African and Asian continents. With a mind-boggling 6,500 mammal specimens and 20,000 world culture objects, from beautifully crafted textiles and clothing, to jewellery and ceramics, as well as practical everyday objects used for work, home and celebration. Budding archaeologists and geographers will also love discovering the local finds from the Thanet coastline.
WHAT’S ON
2026 is an extra-special year as the Powell-Cotton Trust celebrates 100 years of caring for its buildings, gardens and collections, with families invited to get involved in a year-long creative programme, inspired by what’s on display. Highlights include The Big Museum Build in February half-term, the Spring Eggsplorers Easter Trail, Bricktacular LEGO Workshops on 20 – 21 June, the Festival of Archaeology from 17 – 31 July and nocturnal-themed activities during October half-term, plus some brilliant new additions for 2026, including Africa Day on 24 May, a self-led music trail launching in July and A Cosy Quex House Christmas, running across selected weekends from 21 Nov – 13 Dec.
LEARNING
The Museum has a great learning programme for home educators, children with SEND requirements and schools. There are home educator days for home educating families to visit the Museum, plus a loans box service for UK schools.
VISIT
Quex House & Gardens and the Powell-Cotton Museum are open Fridays – Sundays and bank holidays from 14 Feb – 30 Oct during term time. During school holidays the museum will be open 5 days a week (Weds – Sun). Prices start at £7.00 for children aged 4 upwards (infants 0-3 can visit for free) and adults for £9.00. Annual memberships are also available from £35 (for one adult and one child).
