THE LOWDOWN

Anyone in Kent who considers themselves a bit of a foodie fan will most likely have heard of The West House Restaurant with Rooms, found in the pretty village of Biddenden in the Weald of Kent. It’s been a solidly successful, family-run institution for over 20 years now – under chef/patron Graham Garrett who runs it alongside his wife, Jackie, and son, Jake.

THE LOCATION

Biddenden itself is a rural gem – home to a number of brilliant local businesses, including Biddenden Vineyards which you can tour and visit the Vineyard Shop to stock up on their award-winning range of wines, ciders and juices.

The West House sits in a 16th Century weaver’s cottage – with no need for flashiness the frontage is perfectly understated and in keeping with the surroundings – so you could easily fly past it in the car. But those in-the-know flock here – even in hard times there’s always a full dining room and happy buzz about the place.

THE FOOD

And rightly so, since rock drummer-turned-chef Graham Garrett swapped his sticks for carving knives both he, and the restaurant, have been the recipients of numerous awards and accolades.

The small, intimate dining room, adds to the sense of a special dining experience. The mission is simple – to cook the very best, flavoursome food. Here, nothing is too fussy or pretentious – but just straight forward and brilliant – all served in an a warm, welcoming atmosphere. Locally you can visit the vineyard (as mentioned above). Also nearby is Sissinghurst Castle, heralded for its beauty and diversity, this National Trust venue boasts one of the most famous gardens in England and should be top of the list for family fun and garden-lovers.
