THE LOWDOWN

This beautiful 16th century inn nestled in the peacefully picturesque village of Warehorne is perfect for everything from a relaxed date night or as somewhere to lose yourself for the weekend. A one-time hotbed for pirates and wool smugglers (hence the name) there’s an ancient smugglers tunnel linking the pub to St Matthew’s church that sits opposite.

Armed with this quirky history and the fact it’s still a rural gem, surrounded by grazing Romney Marsh sheep, this medieval pub oozes old Kentish charm. Enjoy the sense of going back in time as you arrive in this little corner of Kent.

THE VIBE

Views stretch out across the surrounding marshes that lead down to the Channel and – on clear days – beyond to France. And yet at the same time, the Woolpack is accessible, with London being under an hour away. A short taxi ride takes you to the nearest station, Hamstreet station, which is only eight-minutes to Ashford International, (for high-speed trains to London St Pancras in 35 minutes).

FOOD & DRINK

There’s a wonderfully welcoming bar and the food comprises delicious modern classics. Wednesday is Steak Night, Thursday is Pie & Pint Night, Friday Fish Special. There’s a brilliant Kids Menu and an entire Vegan Menu too, so everyone is catered for. Visit on a Sunday and you can enjoy every kind of Roast – from Leg of Romney Marsh Lamb or 32 Day Dry Aged Sirloin of Beef to Vegetarian Pie of the Day.

Brand new are their weekly themed nights with Pizza on Mondays, Burgers on Tuesdays, Steak night on Wednesdays (£49 for 2 people), Pie & Pint night on Thursdays (£22.50) and Friday Fish Specials, a weekly changing selection featuring fresh local fish.

STAY

There’s five characterful guest rooms where the designs are cool and quirky. Some have roll top baths and there are Midweek Retreat Offers (from £169) which include a 3-course meal and cooked breakfast the following morning.

There’s also a variety of private spaces available to hire for functions and special events. It’s time to start planning your next countryside escape.
