What’s on? 8 fresh new things to watch on TV this week

Emma Myers gives us a modern day Nancy Drew, Nikki Glaser and Gina Rodrigues compete for your LOLs, Andrew McCarthy wants you to know he isn’t a Brat, while Wimbledon and the Euros vie it out for your attention – it’s all happening on the box this week.

PICK OF THE WEEK

A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder, BBC iPlayer, Mon 1 Jul

Forget Wednesday Addams and her spooky, gothic brand of crime solving, we are all about A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder. Ok, you’ll have trouble forgetting about Jenna Ortega’s scowl entirely as Emma Myers aka Wednesday’s roommate in the Netflix smash, takes the lead in this zippy adaptation of Holly Jackson’s YA novel series. She plays Pip Fitz-Amobi, a true crime obsessive on a mission to prove the alleged murder-suicide of two of her schoolmates was in fact a murder, and the killer is still on the loose! Mathew Baynton and Anna Maxwell Martin join Myers in this fun, modern day Nancy Drew.

Wimbledon, BBC One and Two, until Sun 14 Jul

Obligatory vat of Pimms at the ready with a strawberries and cream chaser – Wimbledon 2024 has kicked off and with it all the drama and racket smashing of Centre Court. Can Carlos Alveraz make it two for two? Has Novak Djokovic still got it? Will Andy Murray go out with a bang? After five long years away from SW19, will Naomi Osaka reign supreme or will wild card Emma Raducanu pip her to the post? It’s all to play for. It’s however more exciting than the Euros (sorry lads) more on that later.

Sprint, Netflix, Tue 2 Jul

There is a need, a need for speed – apologies this is not a homage to Top Gun it is a documentary about some of the best sprinters gunning (literally) to steal Usain Bolt’s title as the fastest person on the planet. Sprint follows them from the 2023 World Championships to the 2024 Paris Olympics, exploring the psychology of these superhumans and what it takes to succeed. Apparently you need ‘main character’ energy according to Noah Lyles, third fastest 200m sprinter in the world, and sex appeal according to Sha’Carri Richardson the fastest woman in the world. A mile a minute viewing.

The Man With 1000 Kids, Netflix, Wed 3 Jul

Be warned, though this documentary charting one man’s rise (and rise) to fatherhood makes for some grim watching, it’s impossible not to get sucked into this stranger than fiction story of The Man with 1000 Kids. Over three episodes, this series investigates the private sperm donor who went rogue. Jonathan Meijer travelled the world, manipulating and deceiving hopeful mothers into having his children and it is now estimated he has over a 1000 offspring. Featuring interviews with many of his unwitting, um, customers to try and understand his motivations. Grimly fascinating.

Not Dead Yet, Disney+, Wed 3 Jul

Gina Rodriguez’s 40something journo with a sixth sense, Nell, is Not Dead Yet and back for round two offering you some light relief amongst all the election commotion this week. She’s still writing obituaries, meeting the dead people she’s writing about and coming up against her mean boss Lexi (Lauren Ash) while pondering all the big mistakes she’s made in life. This season sees Brad Garrett adding some star power to this easy, if a little predictable, mid-week watch.

Brats, Disney+, Fri 5 Jul

Every generation has one, but back in the early Eighties, the likes of early career actors Andrew McCarthy, Emilio Estevez, Demi Moore, Molly Ringwald and Rob Lowe were labelled it first: the Brat Pack. McCarthy of Pretty in Pink fame, leads this doc speaking with his fellow Brats to see if this label was fair, and how it affected everyone. Watch for plenty of nostalgia and Hollywood war stories which we’re always here for.

Someday You’ll Die, Sky Comedy/Now, Fri 5 Jul

We’re all thinking it, and actor, podcaster, brutal comedian and expert roaster (just ask Tom Brady, Rob Lowe and Alec Baldwin) Nikki Glaser, is saying it. In her latest comedy spesh, produced by the director of the Super Bowl Half Time Show no less, Glaser chats children or her lack thereof, age, plastic surgery, and how often she thinks about death – only like 10-15 hours a day apparently. Sharp, hilarious and a bit of all of us.

The Euros: England vs. Switzerland, Sat 6 Jul, BBC One

The England squad scraped through to the quarter finals of the Euros (all hail Jude Bellingham!) Now they face Switzerland and it would be incredibly unpatriotic of us not to watch even if it is through our fingers (seriously lads don’t leave it until the 95th minute to equalise) or while doing the ironing. Let’s watch to see if Gareth Southgate’s Lions can steal another win.
