Review: George & Dragon, Chipstead
Loved by both locals – and diners coming from further afield – you’ll get a warm welcome, friendly service and excellent food.
THE LOCATION
This charming 16th-century pub sits in the heart of Chipstead village, just outside Sevenoaks. You’ll find it on the snaking, suburban High Street – with parking hidden away at the back.
THE LOWDOWN
Since the time of King Henry VIII the George & Dragon, Chipstead, has been offering hospitality to locals and visitors. It’s had a makeover or two since then – most recently renovated by owner Ben James in 2020 – but maintains that perfect balance of historic charm and modern comfort.
I’ve been in summer and I’ve been in winter. I’ve been with the gang for a good old Christmas knees up and I’ve been with the in-laws for a family catch up. And the George & Dragon has served us well (quite literally) every single time.
THE VIBE
Inside reveals 400 years worth of character and charm, log fires and cosy corners. Nothing too fancy, but warm and welcoming – wood beams, exposed brick, sofas and a roaring fire give just the right ambiance for a pub that serves excellent food , rather than a more formal restaurant.
Spread over two floors, you can enjoy food and drinks in the bar area with its open fire – or the upstairs dining area is perfect for group gatherings. Got a special event coming up? I have heard lots of positive reports from people who have booked the ‘pig pen’ inspired upstairs dining room – perfect for private parties.
George & Dragon does exactly what a fine dining pub should do – and it does it well. Friendly staff, welcoming (unstuffy) feel, cosy fire in winter, great outdoor space for summer.
On warmer days sit in the gorgeous garden area, not huge, but a well designed space where you can eat in style on the tables nestled among the plants, with the added benefit of heat lamps and fairy lights for those cooler evenings.
SCOFF AND QUAFF
With an ever changing menu – the team of chefs work passionately everyday to use the best of Kent and Sussex produce, so everything is fresh, seasonal and where possible local.
My lunch companion, Georgia, opted for the Oven Roasted Chicken Breast which she said was succulent and full of flavour – particularly the delicious accompanying compote.
The food here is cracking. And when you account for the quality of the dishes against the price – it’s excellent value for money.
I had one of their Poke Bowls – consisting of avocados, rice, edamame, spring onions, nuts and crunchy sesame – the exact ingredients vary with the seasons but one things is consistent, they pack a flavoursome, nutrient-powered punch.
After selecting such a healthy Main Course, my only option was to redress the balance with a pudding. Make mine a Poached Pear, almonds, coffee & Amaretti Syrup with Vegan Vanilla Ice Cream (well it was one of my 5-a-day).
The choice of dishes here was just how I like it. Enough choice that meat-eaters, pescatarians and vegetarians (or vegans) will all be well catered for – but while keeping a tight, well-thought-through menu. Less is definitely more – and you’ll most definitely want more.
KID-FRIENDLY
Oh yes. Outside is a newly built and super cute kids’ play area to boot them out into (pictured above). Plus, there’s a brilliant kids’ menu deal – check it out here – (just £10.95 for 3 courses!) A price which makes it seriously tempting to give yourself a break from home chef duties and treat the family to a meal out.
OUT & ABOUT
You’re not far from the centre of Sevenoaks here, if you’re in need of a whizz round the shops. Or for family day trips you’ve got some National Trust treasures on the doorstep, like Chartwell, a country house near Westerham that’s famous for being the family home to Winston Churchill, medieval moated manor house, Ightham Mote or stunning country house, Knole, that sits within a deer park, right in the middle of Sevenoaks.
Chipstead itself benefits from a strong community feel, Chipstead Sailing Lake and wonderful local walks. Try the one that takes in the wonderful views over Chevening Estate. You can either park and walk from St Botolph’s Church or park near the church at Chevening for a good circular route. Known locally as the Keyhole Walk, when you’re high on a hill you can see Chevening House off in the distance through a gap in the trees, framed like a picture (or as though through a ‘keyhole’).
THE MUDDY VERDICT
GOOD FOR anyone after a friendly vibe where they serve good food – from date-night to a group gathering, or family a meal at the weekend. Whether you are popping in for a coffee during the day, a quick drink after work or sitting down to enjoy a tender piece of venison and a glass of Claret after a long walk, this pub will serve you well.
NOT FOR don’t expect rolling views or a rural location, since it’s nestled in the suburbs of Sevenoaks. Having said that you’re only moments from the countryside and some stunning local walks.
THE DAMAGE Starters from £6 – £9; Mains around £15 – £18; Puddings £7.50. When you consider the high standard of the food this is very reasonably priced.
