<p>It&#8217;s almost a year since Katrina Handford took over the headship at <a href="https://www.kent-college.co.uk" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Kent College Pembury</a> (she started in January 2022). So it seemed like the perfect time to find out how she&#8217;s been building on the school&#8217;s success and what her plans are for the future. Here Katrina Handford reveals the 5 key features she&#8217;s looking to enhance in her time at the helm…</p>



<p>&#8216;There is a real buzz about Kent College at the moment,&#8217; explains Miss Handford. &#8216;That&#8217;s because it is on a mission; a mission to ensure that every student has the opportunity to find their strengths and talents and become equipped for very bright futures. Its focus on preparing students for life beyond KC is visible in all aspects of school life.&#8217;</p>



<p>So which five areas of the school really showcase KC’s drive towards providing a future focused, creative and adventurous approach to life and learning? Read on!</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-1-excellent-facilities">1. Excellent Facilities</h2>

<p>Katrina Handford says: &#8216;KC boasts facilities which ensure they can provide outstanding opportunities for the pupils so they can approach life and learning with creativity and adventure. These include a new state of the art fitness suite, followed by the development of a new swimming pool, ensuring elite athletes are catered for and can push themselves to the limit.&nbsp;Plus a revamp of the network and ICT systems means the students can keep pace with the ever changing world and technology around them.&#8217;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">2. The Sixth Form Offer</h2>

<p>Katrina Handford says: &#8216;KC’s exciting Sixth Form Honours Programme really does set it apart from other schools.&nbsp;Each student is able to choose a pathway that plays to their strengths and allows them to&nbsp;make the most of the myriad opportunities in the Sixth Form. Pathways include five key skills areas &#8211; from Leadership and Development &#8211; in which students participate in the Ivy House Award, a transformational personal and professional development programme which aims to develop extraordinary leaders. To Entrepreneurship &#8211; in which students participate in the Young Enterprise Programme where they will design, cost and implement a business initiative within the school. These are just two examples of the outstanding and varied offering for Sixth Form at KC.&#8217;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">3. Doing All the Good You Can</h2>

<p>Katrina Handford says: &#8216;This ethos sits at the very heart of KC. There aren’t many schools which are as warm, friendly and inclusive as KC.&nbsp;Teachers and students work hand in hand, alongside each other, supporting and challenging each other to be the very best they can be, not only for themselves, but for the community and the world around them.&nbsp;KC definitely has a family feel, which nurtures confidence in every student and ensures every student is&nbsp;free to be themselves.&#8217;</p>

<p>Katrina Handford says: &#8216;KC students are not only destined for success and bright futures because of the future focused and forward-thinking atmosphere within the school but also because of its ability to ensure every student maximises their potential. KC has impressive GCSE and A Level results. However, what is most remarkable is their Value Added scores.&nbsp;This is a measure of results in comparison to potential.&nbsp;KC consistently scores within the top 10% of schools in the country for Value Added, frequently being in the top 5 schools in the country.&#8217;</p>

<p>Katrina Handford says: &#8216;KC’s aim is to equip the students to make a purposeful contribution as global citizens, which means that staff have been tasked with ensuring teaching and learning, academic enrichment and extra-curricular activities all have a global and future focus. One of the organisations KC is working with to achieve this is the GC (Game-Changing) Index. As one of the first GC accredited schools, KC students learn to understand their own unique contribution and impact, whilst teachers use the GC Index data to ensure that each student is engaged by tailoring their lessons to the students’ natural interests.&#8217;</p>
