Hey there, square eyes! 7 new TV shows to watch this week

Nicole Kidman and Liev Schreiber are The Perfect Couple, Gemma Arterton proves she’s still a Funny Woman and Gary Oldman is saddling up those Slow Horses – your box is bursting at the seams with star power this week.

PICK OF THE WEEK

The Perfect Couple, Netflix, Thu 5 Sep

Fans of Big Little LiesNine Perfect Strangers and Nicole Kidman, step on up, there’s a new crime drama in town that’s right up your street. Based on Elin Hilderbrand’s pulpy page-turner which sees a lavish wedding end in disaster before it’s even begun when a body is discovered moments before the ceremony, gasp. With an all-star cast including Kidman, Liev Schreiber, Eve Hewson, Dakota Fanning and Jack Reynor, The Perfect Couple will keep you guessing until the very end. We can’t decide what we’re more into it for, the big whodunnit reveal or Kidman’s sleek wardrobe.

Paralympics 2024, Channel 4, until Sun 8 Sep

It’s not time to put your inner sport critic to bed just yet as the Paralympics rage on until Sunday. Team GB are currently second on the leaderboard with 54 medals (and counting), 29 of which are gold – whoop whoop! With plenty of sports still to come – triathlon, wheelchair basketball, table tennis, athletics – this week looks set to be another cracker.

Colin From Accounts, BBC Two, Tue 3 Sep

The ridiculously popular break out hit from Australia is back on our watchlist with a bang! The modern day rom-com, written by and starring real life husband and wife team, Patrick Brammall and Harriet Dyer, gives fans exactly what they need this season; Gordon (Brammall) and Ash (Dyer) officially living together and trying to get Colin the dog back. For those not in the know, the dog brought them together in season one but they gave it away for reasons we are still unclear on. Relatable, refreshing and incredibly authentic if you’re not all over Colin from Accounts yet, take this as your PSA.

Phil Wang: Wang in There Baby! Netflix, Tue 3 Sep

Hold them sides as Phil Wang is back with his second Netflix spesh and it’s a certifiable LOL-fest. Filmed at the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse at Shakespeare’s Globe in London,Wang in There Baby sees the observational comic chat reheated rice, octopus intelligence and being a minor celebrity. Sharp and witty. Bring on the laughs.

Slow Horses, Apple TV+, Wed 4 Sep

It’s time to saddle up those Slow Horses again, (hurrah!) for a fourth outing of this exquisite espionage drama. This season sees the MI5 rejects scrambling after a shocking attack on the capital over Christmas. All your favourites reprise their roles – Gary Oldman, Jack Lowden, Kristin Scott Thomas, Jonathan Pryce et al – while Hugo Weaving, Joanna Scanlan, Ruth Bradley, Tom Brooke and James Callis make a nice addition to this explosive, pacey series which just keeps getting better and better.

Dr Death, Paramount+, Thu 5 Sep

And something for the true crime fans, the second season of the podcast-adapted drama, Dr Death, hits UK screens this week. Back with another doctor up to no good story, this season follows the unravelling of renowned Italian surgeon, Paolo Macchiarini (played by a captivatingly creepy Edgar Ramirez). Macchiarini pioneered synthetic organ transplants, on the surface an absolute game changer, but when journalist Benita Alexander (Mandy Moore) covers his practice for a story, something horrific emerges. Jaw-dropping and shocking.

Funny Woman, Sky Max, Fri 6 Sep

Funny Woman, the UK’s answer to The Marvellous Mrs Maisel, returns this week and Gemma Arterton is as warm, charming and lovely as ever as comedian, Sophie Straw. Based on Nick Hornby’s sell-out novel, season two sees Sophie’s breakthrough show Barbara & Jim get cancelled forcing her to go it alone with a new show, Just Barbara. With Roisin Conaty joining Arterton, Arsher Ali, David Threlfall, Clare-Hope Ashitey and Alistair Petrie, you can expect the same levels of light-hearted humour, Sixties fashion and blue eye shadow.
