8 binge worthy new TV shows landing this week

Sophie Turner shines bright like a (stolen) diamond while Adam Brody and Kristen Bell unexpectedly find love – it’s a good job the weather is a wash out this week as the TV is too good to miss!

PICK OF THE WEEK

Joan, ITVX, Sun 29 Sep

It’s been months since we first caught a glimpse of a blonde-bobbed Sophie Turner for her transformation into the eponymous jewel thief, Joan Hannington, and finally the hotly anticipated drama lands this week (cue excited clapping). Based on the cat burglar’s own memoir, the series follows Joan‘s journey from abused wife to the Godmother of diamond dabbling and the many (many) costume changes and identities in between. We’re in it for the glam 80s fashion and the Queen of the North’s welcome return to telly alongside Frank Dillane, Kirsty J. Curtis and Laura Aikman.

The Great British Bake Off, Channel 4, Tue 24 Sep

Noel Fielding, Alison Hammond, Paul Hollywood and Pru Leith ahead of the 15th season of The Great British Bake Off

It’s baaaack! That’s right, The Great British Bake Off returns for a fifteenth serving of dough blunders, soggy sponge and singed eyebrows as another host of Betty Crocker wannabes battle it out under the watchful eyes of Noel Fielding, Paul Hollywood, Prue Leith and Alison Hammond. The first week, as is tradition, is Cake Week where the troupe are tasked with elevating a loaf cake, followed by a Technical challenge with a twist and a realistic illusion cake for the showstopper. Though it may induce a craving for cake it’s always a joy to watch.

Ellen DeGeneres: For Your Approval, Netflix, Tues 24 Sep

Since she and her talk show were cancelled back in 2020, Ellen DeGeneres is finally speaking out in a way only she can; on stage, doing stand-up in front of thousands of people in her second – and reportedly last ever – comedy spesh. In For Your Approval she reveals what she’s been up to since she was kicked outta showbiz – raising chickens and learning to parallel park apparently – as well as sharing some personal reflections on her career in general. Even if Ellen isn’t your usual comedy bag, we’re interested in what she’s got to say about her exit from Hollywood.

Ludwig, BBC One and iPlayer, Wed 25 Sep

Love you some cosy crime? Ludwig should be top of your watchlist this week then. The comedy crime drama sees David Mitchell doing his very best David Mitchell as a reclusive genius forced to impersonate his detective twin brother, who has mysteriously disappeared, in a bid to find him. Cue plenty of awkward interactions, an onslaught of curious murders and some puzzle solving action that fans of Jonathan Creek will love. Anna Maxwell Martin joins Mitchell (erm there’s a double act we never knew we needed) in this sharp, slick, deliciously quick crime caper.

Nobody Wants This, Netflix, Thu 26 Sep

We’ve already seen Andrew Scott as a Hot Priest in Fleabag and now we welcome Adam Brody as a Hot Rabbi in Erin Foster’s hilarious new will-they-won’t-they rom-com, Nobody Wants This. Kristen Bell plays his love interest Joanne, an agnostic host of a sex and relationship podcast. Despite their differing outlooks on life, all the usual problems of modern day dating and meddling families, Joanne and Noah (Brody) can’t ignore the spark between them. Snappy, sassy and a breeze of a binge, based on Foster’s own experiences converting to Judaism for love.

Grotesquerie, Disney+, Thu 26 Sep

Niecy Nash, Courtney B. Vance, Lesley Manville and, um, Travis Kelce, star in Grotesquerie, Ryan Murphy’s latest creep fest (as if Monsters last week wasn’t enough!). Nash plays detective Lois Tryon sent to investigate a series of gruesome murders which have unsettled a small community. Between trying to solve the case and battling her drink problem, Tryon seeks help from a journalist nun (yep, you heard). But as the killer keeps killing, she quickly begins to question who, if anyone, she can really trust. Cushions handy for this one folks!

Will & Harper, Netflix, Fri 27 Sep

Providing the warm and fuzzies this week is Will Ferrell and his close friend and former head writer at SNL, Harper Steele. This gorgeous documentary follows the pair on a cross country road trip to reassess their relationship after Harper came out as a trans woman. Travelling from New York to California with plenty of “redneck” bars in between, Will helps Harper find out where she now fits into society. Open and completely candid while still bringing the LOLs, Will & Harper is not only a joy but a welcome documentation of the trans experience.

Apartment 7A, Paramount+, Sat 28 Sep,

This creepy prequel produced by John Krasinski is a must for fans of the 1968 cult smash, Rosemary’s Baby (and those who are welcoming Halloween early this year). Set in the very same building as the original, The Bramford, Apartment 7A focuses on the character Terry Gionoffrio (played here by the exquisite Julia Garner). After suffering a devastating injury on stage, Terry’s hopes of Broadway superstardom seem as shot as her ankle, that is until she is taken in by a wealthy couple (Dianne Wiest and Kevin McNally) and a fellow Bramford resident offers her another chance at fame. A chance which of course comes with some devilish strings attached, eek. Consider your weekend movie night quandary, sorted with this.
