<p>This cinematic beauty by award-winning filmmaker, Alfonso Cuarón, should come with its own disclaimer alert for plot twists, unreliable narration and startlingly steamy scenes. Cate Blanchett – we know, enough said – plays renowned journalist, Catherine Ravenscroft, whose reputation, and life, is threatened when she receives a mysterious, self-published novel.&nbsp;<strong><em>Disclaimer*&nbsp;</em></strong>unspools via two narrative threads which will keep you guessing right to the end. Complicated? A little, but trust us you’ll be hooked trying to figure out what on earth is going on. Kevin Kline, Sacha Baron Cohen and Lesley Manville also star in this delicious drama. We’re watching for Blanchett and the serious property porn – the Ravenscroft household is to die for.</p>

<p>The Beeb’s slick, fast-paced court room drama,&nbsp;<strong><em>Showtrial</em></strong>, is back by popular demand with a whole new cast and a new murder to solve. The superb Adeel Akhtar leads the charge as defence solicitor Sam Malik who steps up when a police officer is accused of leaving a high profile climate protester for dead in a hit and run. Barney Fishwick, Michal Socha and Joe Dempsie also star in this incredibly moreish show.</p>

<p>Funny women Sophie Willan, Jayde Adams, Siobhan Finneran and Lorraine Ashbourne are back for another banging Bolton-based season of&nbsp;<strong><em>Alma’s Not Normal</em></strong>. After touring with her local theatre troupe, Alma (Willan) returns home and is ready to become a star, but life has other plans. Light-hearted, super funny but with a few unexpected teary moments – Finnernan is superb as Alma’s addict mum. A great watch if you’ve already had your fill of all the spooky stuff this time of year brings.</p>

This true crime doc delves deep into&nbsp;<strong><em>The Menendez Brothers&nbsp;</em></strong>case which the drama is based on, examining the shocking crime and ensuing trial. Featuring interviews with the prosecution and defence lawyers involved, and with comment from Lyle and Erik Menendez themselves, this is full fat fodder for true crime fans.</p>

<p>Providing the laughs this week is the brilliant Ali Wong who is returning to stand up after her starring role in the brilliant&nbsp;<em>Beef</em>&nbsp;last year. In&nbsp;<em><strong>Single Lady</strong>&nbsp;</em>– her fourth Netflix special – Wong riffs on being just that and embracing her divorced Mum era. Discussing everything from co-parenting and her return to dating in her 40s. Smart, quick and laugh out loud funny.</p>

<p>Want something gory for spooky season which will make you laugh? Enter&nbsp;<strong><em>Sweetpea</em></strong>, a devilishly dark comedy from the producers of&nbsp;<em>Heartstopper</em>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<em>Slow Horses</em>. It stars the brilliant Ella Purnell as Rhiannon, a quiet, down on her luck wallflower who develops a taste for murder and, with her life story – deserted by her mum, poorly dad, bullied at school, invisible at work – we don’t blame her. Nicôle Lecky, Jon Pointing, Calam Lynch, Leah Harvey, Jeremy Swift and Dustin Demri-Burns also star in this superb, if a bit bloody, coming of rage thriller.</p>

<p>An unexpected ensemble cast – Sarah Parish, Mandip Gill, Alexandra Burke, Lucy Benjamin, Larry Lamb, Anita Dobson&nbsp;<em>and</em>&nbsp;Bobby Brazier – star in this slick new thriller. Set in an alternate reality where, in a bid to end violence against women, all men live under a strict nightly&nbsp;<strong><em>Curfew</em></strong>. A measure which seems to be working, until a woman’s brutally murdered corpse is discovered during curfew hours. Gasp. This leaves Parish’s Detective Pamela scrabbling to find out who, whether female or male, dunnit. An interesting premise.</p>

<p>There is some serious Oscar buzz surrounding this fascinating doc by Sue Kim. It follows the tradition of the Haenyo, a South Korean term for the group of female divers who harvest food from the bottom of the seabed just off the shores of the stunning Jeju Island, by hand, without oxygen. Sadly, their way of life is under threat due to pollution, the climate crisis and no uptake from the next generation of women. Utterly captivating from the start, the footage of the ocean and Jeju Island is out of this world.</p>

<p>Laura Dern<em>&nbsp;and&nbsp;</em>Liam Hemsworth – we know, ob-sessed already – bring you this swoon-worthy movie landing just in time for the weekend. Dern plays Katherine Loewe, a newly single writer on a Moroccan writers retreat hoping to cure her writers block and finish her novel. What she doesn’t bargain for is falling in love with much younger hottie, Owen Brophy (Hemsworth), who is on the retreat with someone else (awkward). Diana Silvers, Younès Boucif, Adriano Giannini and Rachida Brakni join the star crossed-lovers. Yes it’s giving an&nbsp;<em>Eat, Pray, Love</em>&nbsp;vibe but&nbsp;<strong><em>Lonely Planet&nbsp;</em></strong>is an easy watch and fills the rom com shaped void left behind by&nbsp;<em>Nobody Wants This.&nbsp;</em></p>
