And they’re racing… at Lingfield Park

Heading to the races at Lingfield Park on Good Friday? Here are six things you didn’t know about Europe’s richest All-weather Champions Finals Day.

It’s a great family day

As well as all the fun of the racing, there’s free face painting, inflatable derby hoppers, an Easter egg hunt,  mime artists and live music throughout the day. Oh, and a chocolatician.

Children go free

Yep, simple as that. If they’re under 18 and accompanied by an adult, entry for your little darlings is entirely free. We can’t promise they won’t nag you to cough up for an ice-cream though! And yes, the traditional Mr Whippy ice-cream van will be there to tempt them.

It’s not a super dressy affair

You can dress up if you fancy it – but this isn’t Ascot so you can leave your designer duds at home and put comfort first. It is an all weather track, after all, so best to dress accordingly. Think more smart casual attire than top hat and tails. On the definite no-go list are torn jeans, football shorts and shirts, beachwear and fancy dress. Of course if you’ve got a great hat that hasn’t had an outing since cousin Betty’s wedding, by all means pop it on!

There’s a lot of money up for grabs

£1 million is on offer on Finals Day across the six race categories, making this raceday the richest all-weather raceday ever staged in Europe, as well as one of the richest racedays in the UK. All that money makes it one of the most thrilling race days on the calendar – whether you’re there as a jockey, owner, trainer, or you’re cheering on your favourite horse from the grandstand.

The story of all-weather racing

All-weather Racing dominates about one-fifth of British horse racing fixtures. The All-Weather Championship consists of more 200 fixtures throughout the season, which runs from October till March, ending with this spectacular finals day at Lingfield Park. Horse trainers, owners and jockeys have supported all-weather racing since its creation over 20 years ago.

There are six categories of racing

There are six categories of races for horses – The Mile, The Middle Distance, The Marathon, The Sprint, The Three-year-old, and The Fillies and Mares – which are designed to test every horse, jockey and trainer in the UK.

The All Weather Championships Finals Day is held at Lingfield Park on Good Friday (19 April). Gates open at 11am and racing starts at 1.30pm with the last race at 4.45pm.
