Photo: The Manor House Exclusive Collection

A grand, traditional stately-home of a five-star hotel in the magical village of Castle Combe. With the Bybrook river and pretty woods surrounding, this really is dog-friendly country luxury. There are 23 acres to explore within the grounds (with poo-bins!). Dogs are totally catered for, and even have their own package: Tails and Trails. Stay in the main house or in one of the cottages in the beautiful Italianate grounds, and enjoy golf or Michelin starred food.

Bishopstrow House & Spa, Warminster

This Georgian country house on the banks of the Wylyle River has 27 acres for your pet to scamper around. After that you’ll need the open fires, cream teas and luxe spa to recover. Some rooms have their own private patio – super-handy for pooch. Indoor & outdoor pools and tennis courts mean you probably won’t even get as far as the local attractions: Longleat, Stourhead and Stonehenge.

ESSEX

Maison Talbooth, Dedham

Surrounded by Insta-ready walks through Dedham Vale in the heart of Constable Country, Maison Talbooth is a quintessential country house that’s as chic as it gets. The four-star hotel is home to 12 contemporary, spacious bedrooms, all suitable for doggy guests and their well-behaved owners (you’ll find a doggy bowl, treats and their own fluffy towel). In need of some one-to-one time with your two-legged other half? Then the Milsom team will look after your pooch while you’re whisked off in a courtesy car to Le Talbooth a few minutes’ drive away – an idyllic restaurant and terrace, serving up local and seasonal treats. In the morning, chill out on the terrace, which leads to the outdoor pool (no doggy paddling allowed, I’m afraid), hot tub and tennis courts, and lap up the views across the lush green lawns. But make sure you drag yourself away and head off on one of the many walks along the River Stour to see what else this beautiful area has to offer you and your fur ball.

The Cricketers, Saffron Waldon

I’ve always had a soft spot for this cosy 16th century pub (and childhood home of Jamie Oliver), with rustic but stylish charm (log fires, beams et al) and open-door policy to all manner of pooches. Great for a Sunday lunch, you can also make a weekend of it, as there are 22 double rooms, eight of which offer a bit more pizazz, but all of them come with 4 stars and are pet friendly (you’ll find snuggly doggy towels and a bowl). As for the pub grub, it’s no surprise bearing in mind who lived here that it has a first-class rep of serving up British classics with a twist. The chef Justin Greig has been at the helm for 21 years now and has brought home a good few accolades, including the Visit England Breakfast award, so you can expect your day to kick off sunny-side up before you and your pooch head off on one of the lovely walks that are on the doorstep. Don’t know the area? No probs – you’ll find freebie maps of doggy friendly treks at the bar.

Osea Island, Maldon

Fancy treating yourself and your spoilt pooch to an island paradise? Allow me to introduce you to doggy and owner heaven, Osea Island. Dubbed the Essex Necker Island/British Hamptons thanks to its popularity with A-listers such as Rihanna and Jude Law, the 400-acre coastal resort in the Blackwater Estuary is dedicated to pop interiors and back-to-nature downtime. Almost all of the accommodation is dog-friendly, from the uber-stylish houses to the quirky cool cottages, but it’s what’s on the outside that’s sure to get tails wagging – with miles of beautiful coastline, fields, meadows and gardens to enjoy, Osea Island is the a playground for owners and their pets alike.
