Remotes at the ready! 6 shiny new shows worth staying in for this week
Sharon Horgan is back with her (bad) sisterhood, Zoe Saldaña and Selena Gomez are all about the show tunes and not one but TWO Taylor Sheridan dramas – cancel your plans this week’s TV is too good to miss!
PICK OF THE WEEK
Bad Sisters, Apple TV+, Wed 13 Nov
Sharon Horgan’s dark, family comedy, Bad Sisters, was only meant to be a limited series when it was released back in 2022, but the trials and tribulations of the Garvey sisters was just too good, she’s brought them back for a second! Set two years after the heart-stopping events of last season and Grace (Anne-Marie Duff) is getting remarried. Though a happy time, it’s not long before the past rears its ugly head and the Garvey gals are under suspicion for murder (again!). With all your favourites – Horgan, Duff, Eve Hewson, Sarah Greene, Eva Birthistle – reprising their roles, this is pitch perfect viewing.
Yellowstone, Paramount+, Mon 11 Nov
Thanks to the writers strike, it’s been a looong two years wait for the conclusion of Taylor Sheridan’s melodramatic, neo-western, Yellowstone. So long in fact that Kevin Costner isn’t returning as the Dutton patriarch, gasp! Luckily, Beth and Rip, aka Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser are man enough to defend the family ranch from the likes of the FBI, numerous developers and her own brother, Jamie Dutton (Wes Bentley). Expect the same levels of drama, fights and men in chaps in what we’re sure will be a satisfying close to this particular chapter of the Dutton family history.
Emilia Pérez, Netflix, Wed 13 Nov
Dubbed a crime thriller come telenovela come musical, we can pretty much guarantee you’ve never seen anything like Emilia Pérez, before. Jacques Audiard’s slick multi-hyphenate is an intoxicating tale of identity with a stellar cast – hello Zoe Saldaña, Karla Sofía Gascón and Selena Gomez. Saldaña plays a lawyer hired by Mexican cartel boss, Manitas (Gascón in a moving dual role) to arrange his gender reassignment and secret new life as a woman, Emilia. All unbeknown, of course, to his cartel and his wife – who is played amazingly by a blonde bobbed Gomez. Unbelievably good.
Say Nothing, Disney+, Thu 14 Nov
For some drama without the show tunes, enter Say Nothing. A gripping adaptation of Patrick Radden Keefe’s award-winning 2018 novel which grapples with the emotional impact of The Troubles. Spanning four decades, the series centres on IRA volunteer Dolours Price (played first by Lola Petticrew, then later by Maxine Peake), her sister Marian (Hazel Doupe), and the romance and stark reality of their radicalisation. Using real interviews and real events from the time, (like the abduction of Jean McConville in 1972, a single mother of ten), it’s shocking, beyond tense and surprisingly perceptive. A must-watch.
Silo, Apple TV+, Fri 15 Nov
If real life isn’t dystopian enough for you, be sure to tune into Silo. The compelling apocalyptic drama, set in an underground society, returns and with it, Rebecca Ferguson and all her girl power glory! Picking up where season one left us, and rebellion is afoot while Jules escapes one silo, only to find herself in another equally as cloak and dagger. Iain Glen, Tim Robbins, Common and Harriet Walker also star in this compulsive nail-biter which is certainly not short on what the hell? moments.
Landman, Paramount+, Sun 17 Nov
And just as Taylor Sheridan takes away Yellowstone with one hand, he brings us another epic drama with the other! Landman marks his latest TV binge and we cannot wait to get stuck into it. Based on the popular podcast, Boomtown, the series will revolve around the world of oil drilling and profiteering. Featuring a star-studded cast which includes Billy Bob Thornton, Jon Hamm, Demi Moore, Andy Garcia and Ali Larter, we’re here for the back-stabbing, the double dealings and, of course, the drama!
