<p>Research confirms that women don&#8217;t just put their children&#8217;s needs above their own, but also their partner, parents and, even, their pet. We, it seems, come last on our To Do List &#8211; even when it comes to seeking medical help for a complaint. And this tendency to put ourselves last puts our health a risk.</p>



<p>The juggle and stresses of everyday life can create physical, mental and emotional challenges to a woman&#8217;s overall wellbeing. These challenges can result in lack of self-care &#8211; whether that&#8217;s not taking regular exercise or proper nutrition and can lead to health concerns including hormonal imbalances, disrupted sleep and compromised immune systems.</p>



<p>Not only that, but having a health check-up during midlife, generally between the ages of 40 and 50, is highly recommended for women.&nbsp;This period is a good time to establish a baseline for monitoring potential health changes and proactively address risk factors.</p>



<p>Now, when I turned 50 on my last birthday, I made myself several promises. One of which was to book in for a long-overdue Women&#8217;s Health Check. So what did I find?</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-lowdown">THE LOWDOWN</h3>



<p>The Women&#8217;s Health Check takes a 360 degree approach to your wellbeing and essentially serves as a preventative check&nbsp; – not too dissimilar from ones some private health insurers carry out, but this is a lot more in-depth and caring as well as tailored to you. </p>



<p>They take an in-depth look at blood pressure, BMI, cholesterol, diabetes, and cardiovascular risk as well as doing a urine analysis, bowel cancer screening and address the risk of Type 2 diabetes, anaemia and thyroid function as well as checking how your liver and kidneys are functioning. </p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-vibe">THE VIBE</h3>



<p>The McIndoe Centre sits next to Queen Victoria Hospital and there&#8217;s dedicated parking right outside for anyone booked in for an appointment. </p>



<p>As I walked in I was greeted by not one, but two smiling receptionists and I instantly felt at ease as I was invited to make a hot drink. While this is a medical centre, there’s a warmth to things, superbly clean facilities and happy staff who seem to love their jobs. I felt heard, looked-after and I knew I was in safe hands.&nbsp;</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-check-nbsp">THE CHECK&nbsp;</h3>



<p>As part of the assessment you&#8217;re asked to do a poo sample in advance (don’t worry, they don’t take the Gillian McKeith approach) it’s not quite as grim as you may fear.&nbsp;You’re also required to fill in a quick questionnaire covering everything from caffeine consumption to family medical history.</p>



<p>Once at the centre, two nurses whisked me into a room and engaged in friendly chat where they carried out some blood tests. First up was a more gentle finger prick before two little cassettes were filled before going into a special machine to test my cholesterol and blood sugar with the results in, wait for it, just six minutes. Unbelievable. </p>



<p>You&#8217;ll have your blood pressure taken and a urine test as well as height and weight recorded to calculate your BMI. Then it&#8217;s on mental health and the emotional side. The questions aren’t intrusive and the staff are very supportive. </p>



<p>They’ll tick off memory screening, anxiety and depression, it doesn’t go too in-depth so you won’t feel wrung out, more just to ensure they can advise and support in the best way possible. </p>



<p>What was really nice is how much time they take on your overall wellbeing, it’s not all test tubes and numbers. You’re really seen as an individual and the busy juggle of modern life is well recognised. It’s a long time since I felt I focused on myself and all within an hour-long appointment.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-doctor">THE DOCTOR</h3>



<p>Dr Victoria Fielding was the GP who has all the credentials and specialises in women’s health, contraception and menopause. She has a lovely calm, kind and informative manner, just what the doctor ordered! Sorry, terrible pun.</p>



<p>She goes through the results which have come in immediately, BMI, urine, bloods, Vitamin B12 and cholesterol &#8211; flagging anything that may be of concern and she&#8217;s happy to discuss anything that has been nagging away at you.</p>



<p>My breasts were examined and I got a little lesson in how to check them properly, something we all need to know. She also looked at some moles I wanted to ask about (I spent years living abroad as a child).</p>



<p>Two weeks after the assessment, Dr Vickey will call me to go through the results in more detail and I’ll get an email with everything in so I can ask more questions then.&nbsp;</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-results">THE RESULTS</h3>



<p>While I wait for the full diagnosis, I can rest easy in the immediate results I was given on the day. My BMI is good but my cholesterol is in the higher end of the healthy range – always wise to keep an eye on that.&nbsp;</p>



<p>It was full marks for my blood pressure and risk of heart attack and stroke very low. Phew. But again, very wise to take stock of everything, even knowing things are ok in some areas can by default make you mindful of what a privilege that is.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<p><strong>Good for:&nbsp;</strong>Anyone wanting to future proof their health and wellbeing. Particularly women entering midlife, with all the changes and challenges that can bring. <p><strong>Not for:</strong>&nbsp;I really can’t think of anyone who wouldn’t want to have a 360 health check to feel reassured and have a personalised treatment plan.</p>
