NEW: Brow & Nail bar

A new hidden gem of a Nail & Brow bar off the beaten track - with HALF PRICE manicures for Muddy readers!

Before going to France for our hols this summer my 12-year-old daughter and I had our nails done at a hidden gem of a Nail & Brow bar that’s just opened. Not in Tunbridge Wells or any of Kent’s other bigger towns that you might expect, but in Paddock Wood in an old-school style department store that has long-been one of my best kept secrets (it’s where I go to buy my kids’ school shoes).
No crowds, no queues. Oh and free parking. What’s more Muddy readers get 50% off their manicures – see special offer below.

Paddock Wood sits in the middle of the triangle between Maidstone, Tonbridge and Tunbridge Wells.  It’s definitely not a big, buzzy place – known mainly for the train station into London (Waitrose next door) and only a small street of shops.

But along here you’ll find Barsleys a traditional, Are You Being Served? kind of department store that holds a special place in my heart. It’s saved me so many times when I’ve (inevitably) left it too late in the holidays to buy school shoes that a trip into Clarks in town means picking up ticket No.104 when they’re currently serving No.78. Only to wait and discover they’ve nothing left in my child’s size anyway. Familiar?

I soon discovered Barsleys – a quieter, only those in-the-know option. Now with the new Nail and Brow bar I’ve another reason to head there. Or I might double up – school shoes for them, quick manicure for Mummy (efficient right?). Park opposite Barsleys in the Commercial Road Carpark (free for one hour) and head up to the first floor of the department store, in the opposite corner to the café and you’ll find this new beauty treatment area.

Helen also has a well-established salon at Putlands Leisure Centre in Paddock Wood where she offers the whole range of beauty treatments from eyebrow shape through to the more complex Botox and fillers. If you’re looking for a friendly, unpretentious yet professional service, Helen is your woman.

She started her business 17 years ago and has been building up a loyal client base ever since. Now Helen and her team are expanding to the pop-up booth in Barlseys.

Alongside these treatments Helen also created and launched her very own range of bespoke skin care called KCH Life. KCH stands for Knowledge, Choice, Honesty – which says it all about Helen’s ethos. Everything is natural, organic, handmade skincare and KCH products can be designed by you if there are certain ingredients you desire in a product or if there are ingredients which are unsuitable for you. Helen can work with you to formulate the perfect unique product, tweaked exactly to your individual needs.

The beauty booth is primarily for nails (manicures or pedicures) and brows but Helen will turn her hand to almost any treatments (within reason) – all treatments are performed on the main shop floor in the pop up, not behind closed doors – although it’s placed in a discreet corner of the store.

Here’s a photo of my friend’s feet, taken while she was having a pedicure here.

There’s also a stand selling her brilliant beauty range – like the Extremely Nourishing Body Butter or Super Softening Himalayan Scrub. So whether you’re stretched or stressed before your hols or just got back and need a post-holiday pick-me-up head to this Nail & Brow bar far away from traffic and crowds.

Good for: Anyone who wants to get away from the queues and crowds and after a nail bar/brow experience but without any pretension. Those who likes their skincare organic and bespoke – especially those with specific skin requirements and enjoys trying out new brands – KCH Life is for you.

Not for:  The pop-up is small, so if you’re looking for a more anonymous drop-in experience, and a private room, it might not be for you. And the department store, while complete with traditional charm, doesn’t provide the kind of serene glamour you get in top town-based beauty salons.

££: Manicure: £26.00, Pedicure: £26.00, French manicure: £32.00, Gel manicure: £29.00, Gel soak off: £5.00, Gel file and paint: £19.00, File & paint with normal OPI polish: £16.00.

**MUDDY EXCLUSIVE: Muddy readers get a HALF PRICE gel manicure, costing only £14.50 (normal price £29) or a File and Paint for £9.50 (normal price £19) – just mention Muddy when you book.**
